Because I haven't seen a good movie in over a year, I'm gonna finally start watching the old movies in IMDB's top 250. Before I only restricted myself to watching the movies made after 1990 on that list because I couldn't stand old movies. But now that I am older and wiser and more appreciative of good movies, I'm gonna try out those old movies (but not movies made before 1970 and no westerns). So I'm gonna list movies I'm interested in watching, and I would like people's opinion on them. Btw I'm only gonna watch movies that don't feel "old". Similar to Clockwork Orange, its cinematography/camerawork makes it looks like it was done in the 1990s. I hate grainy and bland looking movies.. it makes them unwatchable. 26. 8.6 The Silence of the Lambs (1991) 77. 8.4 Cinema Paradiso (1988) 49. 8.5 The Shining (1980) (I've seen this, but it's been a long time, I don't think I fully appreciated it before and I want to see it will make my favorite movies of all-time) 88. 8.3 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 116. 8.2 Blade Runner (1982) 126. 8.2 Ran (1985) 163. 8.1 The Graduate (1967) 185. 8.1 Gandhi (1982) 214. 8.0 Fanny and Alexander (1982) 215. 8.0 Ed Wood (1994) 222. 8.0 Manhattan (1979) and these are in the 2000s but I want to see them anyway: 224. 8.0 Mystic River (2003) 250. 8.0 Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003)
I've been downloading some of the great older 90s movies recently. In Blu-Ray quality of course. Just finished watching The Usual Suspects/LA Confidential/Casino
I'm surprised that the Matrix is so low 23. 8.7 I guess the sequels hurt it's score. On the flip side, Inception should be nowhere near as high as it is. More fanboy ballot stuffing. 8. 8.9
How did you ever watch those black and white movies back in the 1940s-50s? It's so difficult. I've only seen North by Northwest and Cuckoo Nest, though they were good, I don't think I want to keep watching movies like that. I like movies that is relevant to me and my era.
That list sucks. But in fairness to imdb, the other ones on the internet I just looked up, suck equally. AFI and AMC TV. I think those lists are good for jarring your memory, but not checking them all off. I used to like to go on binges of watching a specific director or specific actor/actress. Another is going through a genre.
I'm really OCD when it comes to watching things, whether it be shows or movies. I really have to finish a movie or a show if I have the ability to stop, rewind, pause, rec, etc. Citizen Kane was one movie where I couldn't stand to sit through, as great as it was... but I finished it. Same thing with Gone with the Wind.
I've seen all the ones you mentioned in your post except for #250. They (the ones I've seen) were all terrific and some are great films, worthy of being called classics of their respective genres. One I even starred in. That shouldn't be hard to figure out. - Where they are ranked is utter stupidity. :-(-
Just a heads up, Ed Wood was released in 1994 but it's in B&W. Great movie though. 2001: A Space Odyssey is good anyway you can get it, but if you can catch it on Blu-Ray it's worth it.
You should go out of your way to see it. A great flick. There's an extended version out now that is actually the original cut, but it was shortened for international release, the international release being the version I saw. So if you see the 2 1/2 hour film, come back and tell us how it was. Cinema Paradiso won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
