I'll be adopting him/her from my local animal shelter and that's making me a little nervous. I have a very soft spot for animals and I know I'm going to want to take all the ones that look at me, wag their tail and the ones that lay there not looking because they've already giving up. I'm already getting sad for the ones I'm not going to take.

What is the process like? Do they just take you back to death row and say pick one out?

I was looking online and I know they have a quite a few collies and that is what I was thinking about getting. I know collies have lots of energy which is good but does anyone know if they are good with other dogs and cats (I have a couple)? Or does that really depend on how they are raised?

Collies are great dogs, but long haired dogs shed A LOT! You might want to plan to keep your dog's coat cut short during the summer.

I don't like dogs. Why not just adopt more kitties? they're cuter.

Btw, Chihuahua's are great if you already have cats.. great for the cats' self esteem :)

I'm not positive but they should be. They aren't overly protective or set in their ways. But be warned, lots of energy is putting it mildly. They want to play non stop as my sister's border collie always does. However, they are smart as can be. I actually know someone with a pure bred border collie puppy for sale(it's gonna be a bit bigger than most collies, they are guessing 50 pounds, like its dad).

I had collies and shelties as a kid. Great dogs. They are very well mannered and even tempered.

However, if you get the chance to own a Shiba Inu, do it! Greatest dog of all time imo.

My fiance has a Chihuahua. I hated them before she owned one. I love it though.

Don't buy a dog. Continue with your adoption plan. No need to buy a dog when there are millions that can be adopted.

    Go to the Houston SPCA.
Thats where I got my dog. Its a nice big, clean facility.
You can browse around and look at the animals. They all have descriptions on cages regarding where they came from, their age, etc...
When I got my dog all I had to do is tell them which dog I wanted. You fill out a short application. Pay the $70 fee. If the animal is spayed/neutered then you can take it right away - otherwise you have to leave it for the doctors to do that..

When I first went to get a dog I was looking for a German shepherd but those are hard to find in shelters (puppies).
