Story of the Texans in a nutshell even from the 1st pick ever in franchise history. I can't believe it's been almost 20 years!

Carr was the right pick. He was just picked by the wrong team.

What about keeping Carr instead of going after Brees in 06?

Carr would be picked again, and again.. It didn’t work, but as a brand new team.. You hope to land that franchise QB

It started even before that with the Tony Boselli expansion draft pick.

Getting drafted by the Texans was the best thing to ever happen to David Carr. If he played behind the Cowboys offensive line of the mid-90's his disinterest in working hard would have been exposed. Instead, every personal failing gets blamed on the Texans organizstion and that God awful line.

His arm was an absolute cannon, but hopefully by now everybody knows how poorly that correlates to success. By the last time he left the field, he still hadn't figured out how to throw a touch pass, which is pretty pathetic. He had a couple of other decent tools, but he would have been a frustrating chronic underachiever wherever he went, because from day one he wasn't all that interested.

You HAVE to take a franchise QB with the first pick in the history of your franchise. You can't build a new franchise around a DE (unless his name is JJ Watt).

If you're still upset about that 2 decades later, my suggestion to you is to start drinking heavily.

The only way Jacksonville would let us take both Gary Walker and Seth Payne (who were some of our best players in our first few years) was if we took Boselli. If we didn't, they would've pulled one back when we drafted the other. No Boselli = No Seth Payne.

Also, the Texans had to take on either $27.2M in contracts OR 30 players in the expansion draft. The Texans didn't think there were 30 players worth taking so they went the payroll route, taking only 19 players. Even if he didn't play, taking Boselli and his contract served a purpose.

Stop looking at the Boselli pick simply in terms of only picking one player.

I would have thought all the other failures and disappointments since then would have made you forget.

If I remember right, Willie Roaf was available in the expansion draft.

    I had a
I ran a pretty active web site back in those days and covered that first draft extensively. David Carr was an absolute BEAST his final season in Fresno. I mean, he did *everything* exceptionally well - and that's coming from somebody who also favored Peppers.

There are exceptions (JaMarcus Russell) - but, by and large, QBs don't fail on their own (though they likely play a role). There are so many factors needed for QBs to succeed/fail... Carr's Texan tenure was a meeting of so many factors.....

But the pick of Carr was and remains wholly justified. He was a sure-fire #1 pick. Guy had it all.

I ranted against picking David Carr from the beginning. Julius Peppers was a can't miss defensive cornerstone. His career proven that. I think the Cowboys were trying to replicate what the Cowboys did with Troy Aikman. That is let Carr get beat up his first season or so, but slowly build a solid team around him.
The cowboys knew what they were doing. Alas, the Texans did not.

The franchise hasn't done anything since inception, so your sentiment holds weight.

Had the Texans won an SB, this thread wouldn't exist.

I'm still not over the Texans losing Ben Tate without proper compensation.
