but i would really, really appreciate if anyone has an answer. for the last 1 week my computer has been freezing. if i'm using the computer continuously it's fine. but if i take a 20min (or longer) break and come back it acts weird. for about 8 seconds it seems okay and then suddenly everything freezes. it doesn't matter if i come back and run a program or just move the mouse around - after 8 seconds everything halts. i can't even use ctrl-alt-del to reboot. i have to power down by holding the main power button for 4 seconds. also this happens not only while in windowsXP but also if i'm still on the blue login screen of XP... any help on this would be appreciated...
overheating? bad power supply? have you recently gotten new memory? loose cable somewhere? could be a lot of things. sometimes these things are hard to pinpoint on a message board. btw, don't be sorry to ask a computer question, we get them here all the time, if someone can help, they usually do. good luck.
In addition to the above questions, Do you have a reinstall CD for the computer? If it is not a hardware problem (which rockHEAD qualified above), you may just need a fresh install of Windows. If that is the case, I hope you backed up your data.
I hope bronxfan doesn't mind me piggybacking on his computer question thread with one of my own. Anyway, I just got a new computer and really like it. The thing is that, when I spend a bunch of time on the internet, there are these processes running in the background that start taking up all the resources after a while. It completely messes up my surfing and causes pages stop loading because there aren't enough resources to run my browser correctly. The culprits seem to be spoolsvc.exe, winupdate.exe, and windows.exe. I end up having to open up my task manager and having to "end process" in order to get my browser working again. But I don't want to be doing this all the time. These things open up automatically on startup, so I did a google search in order to stop them from starting up. I found out that if I run msconfig, I should be able to prevent those offending processes from loading. I tried that out, but whenever my computer starts off after I've disabled spoolsvc.exe, winupdate.exe and windows.exe, this message pops up that, "System Configuration Utility is currently in diagnostic or Selective Statup mode, causing this message to be displayd and the utility to run every time Windows Starts." Well if that message pops every single time, then it defeats the whole purpose of trying to remove stuff from starting with my computer. And to make matters worse, those three processes spoolsvc.exe, winupdate.exe and windows.exe decided to run anyway. Even though I specificly disabled them, they still can't be stopped from loading. I just want to get rid of it. What can I do? Any help is appreciated.
bronxfan I suspect that your computer is going to sleep, and, for some reason (probably hardware), it doesn't like to wake. I suggest you go to control panel - power options. Check to see if your hardware is set to sleep after 20 minutes. I use the 'Home/Office Desk' profile which leaves everything on except the monitor which will power-down after 20 mins. -- droxford
m_cable You have the W32.HLLW.Nulut worm on your machine (link) Your computer been sleepin' with hookers again? -- droxford
M_Cable, I think you have a virus or at least some adware. The windows.exe sounded very suspicious, and if it's the same as found here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.pws.qqpass.e.html or http://www.viruslist.com/eng/viruslist.html?id=4191&gloss=7372 then you need to go get some up to date antivirus software to see what you can do about it. Looks like Droxford beat me to the first link
I had a problem with a netgear wireless usb adapter and VIA motherboard chipset. Of course the unit passed all standard memory/HDD/Mobo tests and still froze with a clean OS. Eventually I was able to isolate the problem and the unit has been rock solid since the removal of the adapter.
