Can someone give me some examples of actors who have made movies that were completely different from what fans are used to seeing from them, and receiving critical praise for it.

I don't need Jennifer Anniston or Robin Williams.

I'm having a huge mental block.

    Thanks.

Jim Carrey - Truman Show. his previous works were ace ventura, the mask, dumb and dumber... etc.
Robert DeNiro - Analyze that. who woulda thought DeNiro could play an insecure mob boss after all his other gangster roles.

Keanu Reeves gave a surprisingly decently acted performance in Devil's Advocate.

    In my opinion...

    Bruce Willis - Sixth Sense
    Tom Cruise - Magnolia
    Bill Murray - Rushmore
Ian McKellan - Lord of the Rings (yes, X-Men would qualify, too...)
    Will Smith - Ali
Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump (change from a comic to serious actor)
    Dustin Hoffman - Tootsie/Rainman
    Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich
Hugh Grant - About a Boy (plays a shallow ass instead of a foppish Brit)
Edward Norton - Keeping the Faith (Eddy does comedy and pulls it off!)
Arnold Schwarzenegger - Junior/Jingle All the Way (Ha ha! Just kidding!)

VesceySux---Tom Hanks change from comic to serious actor?????

    Nothing in Common
    Philidelphia

(he was also serious (though he probably shouldn't have been) in Everytime we Say Goodbye and The Bonfire of the Vanities))

On Tom Hanks, before he did Forrest Gump, there was Sleepless in Seattle, which is a romantic comedy and different from his previous stuff. Also, his first dramatic role was in Philadelphia as a gay lawyer who was fired because he contracted AIDS. That's where he got his first Oscar.

Ah, yes... I meant Philadelphia (since it was before Forrest Gump). Before that movie, he may have done serious stuff, but he was more known for comedies (Money Pit, Man With One Red Shoe, Bachelor Party, Splash, etc...). He didn't arrive as a serious actor until Philadelphia (and subsequent ly won an Oscar).

I think Steven Segal has really been adding humanity to his characters. He's been gaining weight, in a method acting sort of way, to create a new bridge between his intimidating self and the hearts of his audience.
