I got one telling me they're not giving me anything. Gee, thanks guys. I could have figured that out without you sending me the letter.

And you know that the letter probably cost them at least $5 to send . . . what with all the $200 hammers and all, I'm sure pieces of paper can go for upwards of $3 in Washington . . . not to mention those $5 stamps with 35 cents of postage.

Guess I'll have to own up to my rant to BK a few months ago and send it off to my favorite charity! [IMG]

I heard something like 500,000 letters were sent out with the wrong amount. Not everyone will be getting the full $300.

    same here mc!

I don't believe in the tax cut, but I also don't believe in people in UT having 10 kids and paying the same taxes (less actually) for state education as me.

I finally win! No wait, no I don't... the bozos with ten kids get tax 'reconciliation' too.

    Damn.

BTW, what happens now that the surplus isn't coming in, do I have to pay this crap back? Please tell me that Bush won't make me pay it back, please tell me he'll cover his stupid ass by just further cutting some unnecessary department like agriculture. [IMG] [IMG]

    OHHHHHHH... funny.

we're getting 600, but what I don't understand, is if it's a 'tax rebate' why didn't they apply it to next year's tax and have it act like a credit? Money off of anything you would owe to the govt or a fatter check at the end of the year. It just seems like a BIG waste of resources and MORE tax dollars, especially to mail out notices, then print checks then mail out checks.

This is just a carrot on a string being dangled by dubya so he can say, "I gave the 'merican people money" uh.. yeah dub 300 bucks is gonna fix the woes and economy of this here great nation...

He's trying to 'win us over' with 300 bucks?

Are we trying to be 'bought' by dubya and his republican cronies??

always looking a gift horse in the mouth,

Rockhead, you are right, that's what they should have done. They also would have made interest on that money all year. It was all about politics. Stupid, but I'll take it.

The purpose of this tax rebate was two fold. Not only to cut down on the taxes you paid, but to help out the sagging economy. The government and economists think that pumping actual cash out to people will get them to spend it as consumers, thus giving a quick fix to the economy. If it were a credit to next year's taxes, then nobody would spend it on consumer goods. It would probably be saved.

Whether or not this plan works is yet to be seen. But that was the other reason for cash not a credit.

Supermac, you are right about the two fold. This rebate will put at least half a billion dollars into the economy, stat.

Rockhead - if you want it to be a tax credit, just send it back. Or you can put it in a CD or MF and get a little extra out of it for next April. You also don't need this as a credit, as those same savings are in next years tax plan.

As an economist, this is a great plan. This also allows us, if needed, to generate more money in the future by raising taxes back to last years level, instead of a raise above that level.
