If they use the stretch provision on the Waiver before the 3rd yr, his 15 mill contract will be split between 3 yrs of 5 mill even on the cap.

Now that 5 mill cant be moved, but 5 will not put them in the luxury that last season, and everybody else's contract expires that third season so all they will have on the cap that fourth season is Novak and that 5 million.

If it was only Lin that was locking up their money I would be more worried. It's the fact they have so much money locked onto Melo, Chandler, Amare that's really hurting them. That's not even counting the other salaries in the team.

They will likely match (I think) but it's going to hurt them, even with a stretch provision.

cool. so instead of paying luxury tax, NY is paying Lin 25M in 5 years and asking him to only play for the first two years. what a steal! :)

It's not just the luxury tax that NYK have to worry about.

What's the point of planning to waive him after 1 reason where you can just let him walk now and not worried about it for good.

LOL well this makes me feel so much better. Plus, wouldn't matching this contract still give them all the other penalties, like not being able to sign for players, not being able to trade for players, not being able to sign-and-trade players? And, if its stretched out to 5 years wouldn't they be locked in that state longer? AND, its kinda ridiculous they'd be paying him 10M for doing nothing. What if he resigns again for 10M a year? They'd be paying him 15M a year the first 2 years LOL

Yeah but you don't know what the future may holds... They may have to use that on another player.. What if he blows up after year two?

Say what? Without Lin, the Knicks already have over $70 million committed for the 2014-15 year - to six players. They are going to be in the luxury tax. It's just a matter of how much.

Let's do some math. Even if you drop that $15 mil salary to $5 mil, the effective payment for the Knicks is about $15 mil, given the luxury tax. Add in the final two years and you're at $25 mil for three seasons in which Lin wouldn't even be on the roster. You also make it completely impossible to get under the luxury tax either next year or the year after, thereby eliminating any possibility of sign-and-trades.

The stretch provision might be a minor help, but best case, it would give the Knicks a $25 million bill for three years he wouldn't even be on the team, along with eliminating any hope of sign-and-trades. It's still a bad scenario.

No problem. Just waive those guys and then stretch out the payments over the next 3 years. No luxury tax.

That's dumb, don't think they would waive him and still have to pay his salary for 5 years or whatever. They're tying up cap space by stretching it out..

15mil expiring (as trade bait) > 5mil ongoing cap hold.

So you pay a guy $25M over 5 years to only play for 2 years? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

The Knicks are a prime example of what an inept front office really looks like.

cool story bro.but isn't the contract already signed? I mean if they already put in place on the contract how the payment will be, how can they change anything after? that defeats the purpose of signing ("agreeing") already, based on the written rules.

that's like when people swear on the Bible but still lie anyway. just a thought. It's such BS if they can manipulate the contract agreement again and change it. is it just me that sees the BS in this?
