This is kind of feeding of of pgab's thread on A-Rod's marital woes. Rodriguez married in 2002, 2 years after he had already signed his record-breaking $252 million contract with the Rangers. I'm sure he has made even more than that off of investments, endorsements, etc. Now he is facing divorce and losing half his fortune or at least a good chunk of it.

So my question is, if you had all this money would you get married? I'm not talking about if you got married then became wealthy but if you already had adequate wealth before marriage, would you?

I think 70% of most guys would "cheat" if they could, or put in position too.

if they think they wouldnt get caught.

I would not - unless I had a 100% guaranteed prenup that would give the woman nothing (unless there are kids)... but no alimony.

Interesting question. I think most people will say no because they think if they are super rich they will want to be master c*cksmen but I think most of us are really hardwired to want intimacy and trust.

I was thinking about that manwhore thread last week and I decided if I had it to do over again I might work hard, play hard and be lonely till I was about 40 then when I'm successful and distinguished, go out and find me a 26 or 27 year old hottie wife. Then you really have the time and focus to invest in your family life. You are not so distracted by your hormones and making money. I know you guys will think 40? man that's old; but looking at it from the backside it's really not.

I saw my buddy this weekend that had a daughter at 42. She's 12 now and he is 54. She is is just the light of his life. We had more fun letting her blow off the big fireworks than we ever had doing it ourselves.

If I loved someone so much that I couldn't live without them. That's my standard for marriage now as a thousandaire, and it would be the same if I were a millionaire or billionaire.

    same here,

the question is why do some of these guys get married, do they think its good for their image, do they think they're really in love, do they think it will keep them out of trouble since they could really blow it chasing women and partying?

i don't trust anyone and thus, the root of my problem with all my relationships. i'd never get married if i could, but all the woman i know want marriage as a sign of commitment.

i'm a little perplexed. if she's living with me and i'm pretty much supporting her, how different is that from being married?

Its not different. Don't give in. Why cater to them? Make them see it your way.

So... how many guys is that?

I don't see that it should impact the decision. If you're just worried about the money, let the lawyers work it out.

its funny you brought this up...
Ive have been with my wife for about 6yrs, little over a year married. things changed a lot when we got married... mostly from her end feeling more secure in the relationship. we had problems before and now they have seemed to all go away, just because of a piece of paper.

but this might be off base from the original topic.

I thought that until I got married. It turned out to be quite different to me. I won't universalize. But, when I was cohabitating and de facto permanent, it still wasn't. When I married, I stopped thinking "What if?"

I would only do it if i was dating someone before i was filthy rich, similar to the way guys like Wade and Lebron have ugly wives/girlfriends. They may not be the hot former video girl type like Kobe's wife but atleast you know they are there for you, not the money.

I would because I feel there is more to life than money. I want a family and to enjoy life in all aspects not live basically single for the rest of my life.

Look at who these guys are marrying and how they treat them and I'm not surprised . They marry self centered actress/models and girls that look like they got picked up from a strip club and then cheat on them all the time. Of course they are going to get put through the cleaners.

My wife stays with me even though I am 40 pounds over my ideal weight. And although I make a decent salary, she could find a guy who makes a lot more. Its about finding the right girl and marrying for the right reasons.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet didn't seem to have any problems with their marriages.

Does it really make a difference to your life style if you are a billionaire and you lose half of your money?
