Since Clutchfans is so full of "I'd rather have this, rather trade that" type of people, I'm really curious what you guys have to say to this. If you had the option, do you put Scola in the same exact deal, Landry, or just not do the deal at all? I know right now the dust is settling and it's a hard time to get real answers, but I want to know what you guys would want. Assume the contracts all work out the exact same.
Well, I'd have obviously rather kept Landry, and traded Scola away. Don't know if the Kings would have done that though.
I package Landry. He may be flashier than Luis but he isn't as consistent, is not near the rebounder and something tells me that he still won't be a better player than Luis 2 years from now. Scola is going to make an impact on the court every night. If he is not shooting well one night he'll give you 15 rebounds. Landry, on the other hand, is worthless if he isn't filling up the bucket. I like Landry a lot but I'll stick with consistency and a more well-rounded player.
Which is why it's all hypothetical. Obviously he didn't have the choice, but clutchfans members are always saying, "I'd rather trade this, rather get this guy..." so I was curious what they would rather do in this case.
This. Add to that Scola isn't near as old and decrepit as some make him out to be. He's been the Rockets most resilient player over the past three seasons and keeps himself in great shape. I think he has at least three more solid years in him before he even starts to slow down. And even after that he hardly uses any athleticism as it is. His whole game is about footwork, savviness, positioning on defense, and positioning on the boards. None of which requires huge amounts of athleticism. With Landry, as soon his athleticism starts to decline his value stars going down fast.
Ya know, last night when I first heard this trade I was thinking that I would rather have had to give up Scola. After a night to sleep on it, and hearing some of your comments, I'm going to say I'm glad we made the deal that we did (if there was a choice). I think Morey had an idea of exactly what Landry would be due in 2011, and didn't want to pay it. I am going to really, really miss Carl Landry, but Scola brings more to the table, and he was (and still is) our starter for good reason.
I love Carl and hate to see him go, but I doubt you could find one GM who would choose Landry over Scola.
If you look at stats, I think you trade Scola. But I think the Kings wanted Landry over Scola. However, I think Scola matches up better with Yao than Landry did.
