Altering genetics just seems wrong. Isn't it like playing God? I choose to alter the environment instead of nature.

Didn't God make the environment, too?

For everyone who says it is like playing God, just think that the Christian Scientists say the same thing about you taking medicine, having surgeries, etc. Right now it's new and scary but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong. We're already doing a lot of things to extend our life span. We're using biogenetic technologies to make better medicine and you have no problem using those. This is just using more advanced version of that technology to affect you in a more direct and presumably effective way.

yeah, seems like people are afraid of doing things directly, but have no issues with things that either are:

    a) socially accepted b/c they've been around for a while or

    b) are indirect, therefore it's harder to make the argument.. so then they'd rather take the positive result than go through the convoluted argument to strike it down

I'd say that you're right in that after it's around for a while and gets more accepted, people won't question it as much

immunity to cancer and high intelligence.
as for as the shallow thing in life like so called good hair and greenish blue eyes you can keep it.

my mom had cancer while she was pregnant with me and had a tumor on her arm. it scares me that i could one day develop it or whenever i have kids they'll have a the traits for it.

I'd hate to drag this into D&D but to be honest, this is one the worst things that could possibly happen. To engineer children like how we complete our decor set is, for me, a nightmare. I have a multitude of concerns about it...one of them being the fact that the traits children will be implanted with are going to be culturally-defined and socially "acceptable" ones. I can't bear our consumer culture defining how people should live and work never mind how they are born.

For example, the concept of beauty is HIGHLY subjective and varies across all cultures. I hope I never see the advent of a million Calvin Klein babies.

hight intelligence can be as much a burden as a gift..

and a too fine tuned/sculpted visage.. can potentially be a draw for equal constant pain and trouble as admiration and attention.. that the child/person may not at all want to experience..

what if the child is born with a personality that aspires for things of greater significance.. from himself/herself.. and from others... and his/her would be highly appreciable appearance.. helplessly drew the wrong kind of attention/situations.. that constantly hindered, interfered with, and marred such aspirations..?

even with the power to choose.. you may end up endowing your child with what you may've viewed as "gifts".. ending up as mere "curses" your child grows and develops to desire to not have any part of and/or resent.. that may be completely incompatible or counterproductive to the type of person that they blossom to be..

as far as a cure for all diseases.. isn't it common knowledge that nature always adapts..? and if you challenge it enough.. it'll respond to said challenge with an answer you may dislike/fear much more than the physiological potential pains/fears you sought to remove before..?

has nature adapted to MMR vaccinations and now chicken pox slowly? legitimately asking you the question.. not sure if there's anything documented on a mutation forming something else that sucks now, but it could well be out there

I have no qualms with choosing any of those choices, but for all intents and purposes I could care less about things like hair color and eye color. Those can be left up to the genes and percentages. I would shed a tear of joy if could make my son highly intelligent, with genetics that predispose him to have a muscular physique, and a big dong as an added bonus. That's much better to me than rolling the dice on being predisposed to low intelligence, obesity, and a small weiner.

At the very least, I don't know why people wouldn't want something like perfect eyesight for their kid, if for no other reason than to save money in the long run. They are going to need a corrective solution anyway, whether it be in the form of glasses, contacts, or lasik. Might as well fix it early with little cost.
