A lot of people I know, especially at work, want me to shave my head since I am going thin on top.

However, I just can't bring myself to do it because I don't want the maintenance of having to keep it shaved all the time. Yet, I can't help but feel that I am in the minority.

So, anyone else out there that is going bald: have you thought about shaving the head or have you already done it??

If you have shaved it off, do you find it easier to maintain than if you hadn't gone Mr. Clean??

I have always said that if I was going bald, off it comes - all of it! I don't doubt I would do it. If I could handle looking at me oddly with really long hair, I could deal with baldness. :)

Of course, Mrs JB might need to approve my choice. :D

I probably would. I'm only 15, so I don't have to worry about going bald soon, but I like not having to mess with my hair. Right now, I have a pretty short haircut. I don't like having my haircut, combing my hair, or putting hair spray or gel in it. So if it was going away, I doubt I would mind shaving it off.

I would. And looking at pictures of my dad starting to lose his hair when he was around 30, I am afraid I might have to start soon .

Manny...now try to be objective...are you going "thin on top" or "bald" there is a subtle difference, and therein lies your answer...and oh,yeah..your co-workers do sound like jerks.

They claim, especially the VP of business development, that it is the "in-thing" now.

I will say that I don't ever want to get into wearing a toupee or hair transplants ("Not only am I the Hair Club President but I'm also a client!"). I would rather keep what little hair I got, but I have gotten the impression that shaving your head was a trendy thing to do.

However, I have never been known to be a trendy person.

Maybe, someone here has done this and can tell us what it is like in maintaining that clean and shiny Kojack look!

Hey, Freak, I know that you have probably thought about doing this at one time or another!;)

    Just saw csons' post...

That is a tough question to answer.

I think that maybe within 10 years, all the hair on top (but the ones on the side) will be gone. However, I really don't know, but around my crown area, it is definitely gotten thinner over the last 10 years (I'm 29 now).

I guess I should have asked the woman who cuts my hair, but she could probably only guess when it will get worse.

Well there are two ends of a continuum here aren't there. You can hold on, Phil Collins style, and look like a complete dirt bag... or you can be futuristic man from Seinfeld.

    Manny,

You and I are in the same boat. I am 29 and was going bald, not thin, on top. I thought about transplants etc... but it was going to be a waste of money.

So one day when I was getting the sides edged up, my barber cut the top really short, one guard I think. At first I was a little pissed, but it was the best thing she could have done. I get all types of compliments on it and it is a huge time saver.

Don't worry about it, and cut it short. It is worth it.

It may or may not work depending on your hair color, etc., but I'd go with the extremely short cut. It makes the shiny parts less glaring, you don't look like a combover loser, and it's easy to maintain.

don't count on it, I had a buddy that was balding at 17

Manny - I am not racist, but unless you are a black guy, shaving your head probably won't look that good... I know a couple of guys that do that, I will say that they look better shaved than they do bald (patches of hair). If that is saying much. :)

That guy on the Shield looks pretty cool with a shaved head.

My hairline has receded about an inch, so I wanted to shave it all off to "make sure." Yea I know, makes no sense. Anyway, I don't keep it all off, but I cut it every few days at 1/8 of an inch.

    So much easier to maintain.

Plus, it brings out my devilishly good looks.

funny you should mention this Manny...

ever since I was a child and I saw my father start to bald, I adamantly stated that as soon as my hair starts thinning, I would shave it all off...

I've said it so often and to so many people that I think that may be the only real truth people know about me...

    :D

i'm assuming its gonna happen within the next 5 years (before I hit 30)... so I gotta enjoy my mid-20s! hence the long spiky hairstyle i guess! :D

Seriously, have you tried Rogaine or one of the other hair-maintaining type products?

It seems to work for some lucky people...you never know.

manny, i am 27, single, and have fairly advanced male pattern balding. I shaved my head 4+ years ago now, and it is the single best thing I have ever done for myself.

    maintenance is signifigantly reduced.
-I do not own a brush comb, shampoo, conditioner etc.
-I do not have to pay someone to cut my hair.
-I do not have to concerm myself with hairs out of place
-all I do is use by mach-3 which i use anyways on my face. I shave in the shower so there is no cleanup. it is so amazingly liberating.

    looks/attention
-I probably get more intrest now than ever in my life, and my body is not helping like it used to(if you know what I mean).
-every day I get a chick that wants to touch my head. every single day. now I cant complain about that.
-there are chicks out there that go nuts for bald men, and the only women that wont be interested in you are the ones that only love long hair.and if they are that superficial, screw em.
-babies love my head. they always stare at me and smile like im a giant version of them. babies think bald men are geat.
-chicks always can forget a guy, but will always remember if the bald guy was cute or not. we just stand out.
-guys dont want to fight bald dudes for some reason, so it halps avoid conflict.

if you have a funny looking head, dont do it, or at least think about it first,. I am lucky, i have the perfect bald shaped head.

    drawbacks.
cold cold cold and chilly. I sleep with a hat on during cold winter nights, and wear a hat around the house even. it dosnt make much of a difference outside however, but if you are not wearing a hat, you can get cold damn fast!!
when you go a few days(3 or more) without shaving, people ask if you are growing it back, so i constantly have to explain when i am being lazy.
also, nicknames. baldie, etc. easily tolerated, hgowever in imaginitive. I am most often told I look like Imotep from the mummy. sadly they are right. I like nicknames, so its cool for me, but if you dont...

best part of being bald. I play with my bald head all the time, its soothing, and relaxes me. bald is beautifull.
