If you are a young backup PG playing behind behind a near-allstar, would you...

...accept an extension at "backup/fringe-starter money" for the opportunity to remain a backup? Or would you test FA the next year hoping to start and let his career take off?

My feeling is that Dragic would not have signed for little at the beginning of the season. Why should he? He apparently doesn't think he's a career backup.

Rockes gave Kyle Lowry the keys to the car. Rightfully so. He outplayed others and worked hard to attain that.

We handed Luis Scola starting power forward money just the same.

If the FOLLOWING year his young journeyman backup outplays him, and Scola is still playing good himself, what are you supposed to do?

Shannon Brown signed a one year offer with the Suns. Looking for a bigger payday not trying to be a career backup even if its overstating his own worth. Jordan Farmar wasnt loyal to his HOMETOWN Lakers. He went to the Nets for more money and starting potential.

With Dragic, I think he does some opt-out & resign if its a Leandro Barbosa type thing where he KNOWS he's a big minutes 6th man getting good pay. Where you can scare him to think he wont get money as good as he's getting with the new CBA coming.

It depends on how confident you are of your own talent. Not all backup PGs turn out to get paid starter money in free agency.

This question should not be limited to backup situations. Any player has to make that decision if he is offered an extension. Should you take the guaranteed money or should you turn it down and test the market for bigger bucks? There is no correct answer. Ask Bonzi Wells.
