asain would we still love him as much as we do? i think not, if he were from france im sure we wouldnt embrace him as much as we do...true? agree with me?
Wow, that's like saying "If Shaq weren't black, he wouldn't be so racist." It just doesn't make sense.
i agree, but part of it is looks too, i betcha if he was a really ugly guy (like wang zhizi) he wouldnt be getting the same following. on the same note, if he wasnt asian, some people wouldnt be picking on him and hatin as much. now if he was french (and not black french), god have mercy on his soul, he would be called freedom fry the entire year.
You are a complete idiot. 7'6'' is where he is from. The fact that he is from China makes him very interesting because no great a ballers have come from there yet, but they will. There is always a first.
yao has the lovable asian look, we are amazed at his height and such because asains are small and he is big, also he is a very diciplined person which shows respect on the court, we love him because he is a reminder of what we want in our own culture
I just actually spent some time piecing together this thread and now I know that you are fricken hilarious Mr. Mooch. Too bad about that username
i dont get why yao's being asian has to do with anything of this.. why do we have apply someone's race to everything?! damn stereotypes!
I think it is the gentle giant thing as well. But not only that, Yao Ming seems to be a quick witted, soft spoken man who doesn't seem to be full of himself and seems to have a good set of priorities. Although he had many warranted chances to complain about numerous things, I do not recall Yao Ming ever saying a negative word about anyone. I think the Asian thing has something to do with it, but I would prefer to think it mostly has to do with his personality.
Bad choice of country, here. Americans haven't been too happy with France in the past, and recent disagreements haven't helped things. People love Yao because he has a pleasant demeanor, has good basketball talent, isn't French, and doesn't play for Utah. -- droxford
I can honestly say that I don't look at Yao and say "Wow, he is so loveable". I look at Yao and see a 7'5" wall that can shoot, rebound, pass and block shots. I see a Houston Rocket that wants to win. This is not about an Asian, this is about a basketball player. Did Dream have that "lovable Nigerian look"? Give me a break.
ON THE OTHER hand... It's kind of a good point.. especially the French angle.. Suppose Yao were, instead, named Martine Francois Ygabershine.. same personality, same general disposition, same height, same talent.. he would, especially now, be nowhere NEAR as popular.. we might eventually warm to him here in Houston, but you think he would be in a Visa commercial trying to buy a little Statue of Liberty? No way. (Ironic that the French gave the thing to us in the first place) And, frankly, I am sure there is some nugget of truth in the idea that his being Chinese contributes to people being more disposed toward liking him. Think about it - how many Chinese buffets can you think of where you can go and stuff yourself silly on some great food for 5 bucks, and have a very polite and attentive Chinese waiter making sure you are having a good experience? Now think of the last time you ever even considered going out for some French food.. hehehe it's expensive, weird, doesn't taste all that great, and they treat you like you're stupid and dirty.. Heck, I've met several French people over the years, and the ONLY one who was tolerable was a 5 year old boy.. I suppose because he hadn't learned to be nasty yet. One of my favorite quotes of all time: "The only thing wrong with France is that it's filled with Frenchmen."
Screw the nationality.. the reason he is liked the way he is He is 7'6" He has a great attitude He has skills He is a Rocket. CASE CLOSED
