we have 25 wins and 13 losts now
we are at the pace of 55 wins,
I am just wonder if JVG get Coach of the year if we have 55+ wins, considering yao is out for more than 2 months and TMAC was not himself for about 2 months also
    what do u guys think??

He should, but we'll still hear "Fire JVG!!!" for the 27 losses. But the outlook so far is that Jerry Sloan is the favorite as of now.

I predicted 57-25 at the beginning of the year when I started the predictons thread.

I hope we get that record, it's very good and still pretty achievable. I think JVG should get coach of the year recognition under such circumstances, but I doubt it will happen.

    Nah, he wouldn't. Why?

Because we all know the league has zero respect for our team.

Yao gets pummeled, no calls. Yao stands straight up, foul on Yao. McGrady gets his arms whacked all over, no calls. JVG so much as mentions the refs in a postgame interview, $10 000 fine.

    Don't we love it :p

I think he should if the team continues to win without Yao, and stays in the top 4 in the league then he should definitly get it and... (can't believe I am saying this) a generous extension.

If we win that many, he should. That's a lot of wins. Dallas and Utah are not dealing with the injury issues that we are. And quite frankly, we're just very well coached. Our mistakes are far and few between, and we always seem to be prepared for our opponent even if we end up losing. We don't get blown out, we fight. That's coaching right there.

if we're still top in defense by the end of the year, he will. Coaches respect good defense, iono about analysts.

When Yao comes back early/mid March, we'll only have our full team for 2 months out of the season. It is mighty scary what this team can do at full strength. NBA CHAMPS 2007

Possibly he might! I would like to see 60 wins though!
I warn you of the fact that Coach of the year is very often a curse on the coach as few Coach of the Year Teams have won the NBA Championship.
To renew JVG's Contract= 60 wins and Getting into the Western Championship Playoff nothing less with the talent he has to work with. :p

i'm not sure what it will take for JVG to win COY. he's up against some stiff competition this season.

    - if nelly gets the warriors to the playoffs he might be a lock.
    - if brian hill gets home court advantage he could win it.
    - if sloan gets home court advantage he could be a favorite.

usually the award goes to the team which most overachieved. the warriors, magic, and jazz are all overachieving. i'm not sure what the general public expected out of the rockets this season, so it's hard to tell if we are infact exeeding expectations.

If we win 55, there's no way in heck the Jazz can get homecourt

The Jazz have been the healthiest team in the NBA.

THe Rockets have been the unhealthiest among contenders.

I don't see how Sloan would get it over JVG

JVG is the best defensive coach in the history of the NBA. His peers recognize it. Too bad there is still the stigma of JVg taking the air out of the ball.

JVG has been a top 3 coach for 12 years running

How do you NOT give Van Gundy Coach of the Year if the Rockets manage to win 55+ games with Yao out at least 2 1/2 months? The guy was playing like an MVP candidate before he went down.

Unless the Mavs or Suns(who have dealt with almost no injuries this entire season) remain so hot that they win 65+ games, I don't think their coaches deserve it.

Avery Johnson may not deserve it, but I think the NBA is in love with him. They talk about what a great presence he is during every national broadcast Mavs game. I think JVG will be hard pressed to beat him out, whether he deserves it or not.

There's no way the Warrriors can make the playoffs, the west is just too good. But I think the COY this season will go to no. 3, Sloan with home court advantage. Everybody tends to rate the West miles better than the East, so success in the West will be looked upon much more than success in the EAst( Magic, Cavaliers, Raptors). So I agree with the last two, but throw in this as well:

    - Heat somehow make a magical run with the Wade-Shaq combination and win the East, given their difficult start.

    - JVG can have a shot at it IF and ONLY IF our defence continues the way it is (89 points per game). Defence is much harder than offense, and hopefully the sports 'experts' know this.
