    Other GMs worth mentioning:

    Mitch Kupchak - Lakers
-Was "responsible" for getting DH, Nash

    Neil Olshey - Blazers
    -Resigned Batum
    -Drafted ROTY Lillard

    Glen Grunwald - Knicks
-Signed a bunch of veterans for cheap

I think Morey should and will be GM of the year if we make a splash in the playoff.

Thunder will have to win the Finals to justify their trade with us.

Clippers haven't done anything in the offseason.

Nope, the Royce White pick kills his chances.

Slow down and let the season transpire before we anoint Morey the GM of the year. He's just now getting it right. It's taken an extremely long time just to get to this point and we're still getting clobbered by WC teams. The EC is our Boo!

Yes the Royce White pic does, because we still could have another pic to develop at the 4 or 2 spot.

    LOL

Anyway, I'm sure we'll make the playoffs.

A better question is, will we make the semifinals?

If we make the playoffs (which is still an if, so I'm not getting ahead of myself), I would think he would deserve strong consideration considering he completely rebuilt the team in one offseason and set themselves up nicely for the future.

But the Rockets being an above .500 team last year may hurt him since if you look at the recent history of the award, it's similar to a "Most Improved Team" award based on executive moves:

    • Indiana's Larry Bird won it in 2011-12 year after the Pacers improved by the equivalent of 15 wins.
    • Chicago's Gar Forman and Miami's Pat Riley won it in 2010-11 year after the Bulls improved by 21 wins and the Heat by 11 wins.
    • Milwaukee's John Hammond won it in 2009-10 after the Bucks improved by 12 wins.
    • Boston's Danny Ainge won it in 2007-08 after the Celtics improved by 42 wins.
    • Toronto's Bryan Colangelo won it in 2006-07 after the Raptors improved by 20 wins.
    • LAC's Elgin Baylor won it in 2005-06 after the Clippers improved by 10 wins.
    • Bryan Colangelo (then with Phoenix) won it in 2004-05 after the Suns improved by 33 wins.
    • Memphis' Jerry West won it in 2003-04 after the Grizzlies improved by 22 wins.

... and on and on. I will say though that in 2008-09, Denver's Mark Warkentien won it after improving by just four wins, getting it after their front office completely changed their financial outlook and improved their team with the Iverson-Billups blockbuster. Still, that team won 54 games and got their first playoff victory in 15 years.

Deserving? Yes, he would be... but the Rockets won the equivalent of a little over 42 games last year. For Daryl to be a leading contender for it, my guess is the Rockets would need to win about 50 games.

GM of the year is a nice award and all, but I'm sure the real award is the quality of the ball on the court and knowing the future will likely be bright.

It would be awesome if we made the playoffs but I don't see it happening this year. There are a few teams behind us that will be in the playoffs no matter what. The Lakers just got Nash back and the Mavs get Dirk back soon, I can't see any scenario where those two teams don't make it in except if they have injuries.

The 8th seed is likely going to come down to a race between the Rockets, T-Wolves, Utah, Portland and Denver, same as last year. I think we're a slightly better team than we were last year but I think some of those other teams are better too and more experienced than us.

Harden and Asik look like very good acquisitions.

I'm hopeful that Lin will also turn out to be a good move, but I can understand it if some think the Rockets should have bumped up their offer to Dragic instead.

Royce White pick looks like a blunder in retrospect. Not sure they did enough homework on him and what his needs would be.

I agree with Clutch that for Morey to be in the conversation, the Rockets need to do a bit more than simply squeaking into the playoffs. There needs to be clear forward momentum that indicates the Rockets are close to being a top-tier team. Winning 50 games with a young, exciting group of players might do the trick. If Terrence Jones or Donatas Motiejunas can break out in the second half of the season like Landry did his rookie year, that could also help.
