Who's next on our list? I know some people want to use it to sign Von. Personally, I'd rather try and find someone else before we use it on Von, save him as a last resort. Centers? Shooters? Honestly, is there anyone else in the free agency that would be worth the MLE that hasnt already committed to another team?
Whats the point in spending that extra money this season? It's not like there are some great free agents available that are going to help us in the future seasons.
One point is that guys are starting to sign for less this year than they would in other years. Ron Artest got 3 years of MLE money, that's much less than everyone thought he'd get last summer. Hedo and everyone the Mavs sign are going to be overpaid, even then it's not much. I'd split the MLE between a couple of guys that in other years would get the whole thing, Wafer is one player, if he tests the market and no one wants to pay him, we could lock him up long term for cheap dollars.
we can't find a decent centre in the current FA market unless we overpay...if Morey decided that Gortat wasn't even worth the full MLE. who's he going to pay the MLE to??? I'm guessing he offered Gortat 4 mil per year but Gortat when for the full MLE. If our GM thought Gortat was only worth 4 mil, hes probably gonna think the garbage centers left like Pachulia are only worth maybe 2 or 3 mil...and they are not gonna sign for that thats for sure...... I don't think we need to use our MLE for our second round picks. I think the standard 2nd rounder contract (2 years + 1 team option) won't have to touch the MLE. Man I'D LOVE IT if we could get Jarret Jack for the full MLE. He'd be a big bargain at that price. Indiana is trying hard to save costs and so probably won't match any offers we make near the MLE and man he'd fit us so well as his age is in sync with our rebuilding focus. Think about it, if Charlie Villanueva went for 7 million, surely Jarret Jack is worth 5 million per year. and CV plays no defense.
I think the only reason Morey is looking for a way to not use the MLE, is because he wants to save that salary space for 2010. I doubt he intends to spend another $5 million this offseason.
1. Charlie V is not worth $7M...Detroit overpaid. 2. Jack is decent, but not worth the full MLE in my opinion, especially with Lowry and Brooks on board.
Mid-level exception A team is allowed to sign one player to a contract equal to the average NBA salary, even if the team is over the salary cap already, or if the signing would put them over the cap. This is known as the Mid-level exception (MLE). The MLE may be used on an individual free agent or split among multiple free agents, and is available to any team that exceeds the salary cap at the beginning of the offseason. The Mid-Level Exception for the 2007-08 NBA season was $5.36 million. The MLE is $5.585 million for the 2008-09 NBA regular season. An example would be the Toronto Raptors' acquisition of Jason Kapono during the 2007 off-season. from wiki
Agree, they can sign the 2nd rounders to two year deals which gives them more flexiblity in trades along with security they wont jump next year. I think there going to try and sign Oberto and if they can use a bit of the mid level money it would be slightly higher then the veterns minimum. The only other person I can see them targeting is Zaza from Atlanta but he is not worth Mid Level Money but I am sure someone will give them a full MLE.
If you have actually read the article, it says we wouldnt use it on any free agent if it became available.
Here's a way that it works for us and LA to keep the MLE (first scenario I have seen that it does work) http://twitter.com/EricPincus (he's an LA guy from one of those sites we don't like - but I take news from everywhere )
If the Rockets keep their MLE or are granted a DPE. I'd like to see them go after Millsap. McGrady + Cook to NY → Mobley + Harrington (exp) + non-guaranteed filler (Sene, Crawford, and Hunter) Brooks + Mobley + rights to Budinger to PHO → Nash *Suns save $2.507M Hayes + non-guaranteed filler (White & Sene) + $3M cash to ATL → D.Andersen (30 day trade restriction) *Hawks make a $1.064M cash profit and get a paid for player DPE → Millsap (restricted) Landry + guaranteed filler (Crawford & Hunter) to UTA → Korver (exp) *Jazz get a replacement for Millsap and save $2.339M draft rights to Eliyahu to POR → for draft rights to Mills Nash, Lowry, Mills Ariza, Taylor Battier, Barry, Korver Scola, Millsap, Dorsey D.Andersen, Harrington, Yao http://twitter.com/RicBucher/status/2509233163 http://www.nypost.com/seven/07042009/sports/knicks/david_may_lee_ve_the_big_apple_177540.htm
dude, nash is 35(36 in feb) why would you put him in a roster that is "rebuilding"...Ill rather keep brooks than trade him for Steve "OLD" Nash
