If We Don't Make Playoffs, Will We Be In The Lottery???

If we don't make the playoffs does that automatically mean that we will have a lottery pick? If so, I won't mind as much that we didn't make the playoffs. We make a good hard push for the playoffs end the season with a really good record, and then even get a good pick in the draft, especially considering the depth of the draft.

Missing the playoffs automatically puts a team in the lottery. We will just have the worst chance of winning. The Rockets will likely end up being the greatest team in NBA history NOT to make the playoffs. The best team ever to miss the post season went 44-38. I see the Rockets doing better than that.

The thirteen teams that don't make the playoffs are in the lottery. So we would probably pick #13. (Great mathemagician, hunh?)

Of course, I'm not sure if the Rockets will have to trade away that pick. Hopefully not. Still, I don't see a 13 or 15 pick doing much for the team.

1000 balls in the hopper. The lottery
team with the best record has five of those with their logo on it.

The team with the worst record has
250 with their logo.

The top three spots are drawn, and the
remaining teams are seeded in order of
record.

Therefore, if the Rockets don't make the playoffs, and have the best of the lottery records, they will have three shots (with a 0.5 of one percent shot in each of the draws) to get a high seed. If they don't get so lucky, they are doomed to #13.

That is why the playoffs, even with 0-4 and a #14 slot is preferable to the lottery. In all likelihood, either situation will yield just about the same draft position, and probably the same player.

Actually, they would have 5/999 (or .5005 of one percent) on their 2nd shot and 5/998 (or .501 of one percent) on their 3rd shot. So your chances would get monumentally better each shot. [IMG]

The Suns won 48 and 49 games in consecutive seasons without making the playoffs (!) back in the day when only 4 teams made it from each conference. You must mean, "best since the playoffs went to 16 teams."

However, if we made the playoffs, we wouldn't pick 14th, we'd pick 17th, because the Eastern Conference has got so many loser teams going to the playoffs. Plus, we won't even get that 17th pick, because we'll send it to Vancouver if we make the playoffs. However, it's still worth it because if we don't pay Vancouver this year, we'll pay a top-15 next year. That won't be fun.

We'll only pay a top 15 pick, if that's where our pick lies JV. [IMG]

Maybe you should retake the class. If Chicago gets the first pick, they pull 250 balls out of the hamper for the next pick, not just one. [IMG]

So, our odds for the second pick would be 5/750.

no you're right dod... it's combos of a 1000, not a 1000 balls.

Ok then, that makes a lot more sense than a 1000 ball lottery. I mean are they actually going to go into the hopper and find all 250 of the Bull's balls and take them out. That would seem like a very inefficient process. I guess they actually do have some brains working over at the NBA offices. Too bad they can't figure out how to fix the horrible officiating.

To further confuse it; there is actually 1001 combos. I prefer to just talk about a big hopper.

Here's the official number of combos per team. I guess one combo is given to no one.

Combos
1. 250
2. 200
3. 157
4. 120
5. 89
6. 64
7. 44
8. 29
9. 18
10. 11
11. 7
12. 6
13. 5

So if the selection order holds true to the odds, the Rockets would have the following chances on each pick:

1st pick 5/1000 = 0.5%
2nd pick 5/750 = 0.67%
3rd pick 5/550 = 0.91%

woohoo, look at those odds increase exponentially!!!

yee hoo! almost a full %age point!

But b/c of Bill Kennedy, this simply isn't acceptable. Please join me in sending the following letter to David Stern.

David,

It's been months since we met on that lone strand of beach. I can almost smell the seasalt, can you? You were so gentle and generous, and you're a gentile.

I've been thinking about what you said. My only concerns are about my parents. They want me to go to college. And your wife, your wife.

I think that perhaps we can be closer if I do join the NBA, it's true. In fact, it'd be wonderful if I could play, w/ say... the Rockets. Just the other day I was watching one of their games against Sacramento. It was a great game, until Steve Francis was thrown out on a horrible call from Bill Kennedy. Could you please fire that guy (*smooch*)?

But I don't know if I could stand it (*sob*) if I had to go to the Bulls, or the Grizz or even Golden State. Protect me David. Put your arms around me and my draft status. Deliver me unto Rudy.

Signed,
Top 3 pick.

Awesome HOOP-T! May 20th we'll find out whether or not our voice was heard or should I say "whether or not the 13th seeded Rockets got incredibly lucky in the lottery".

Fight on brothers and sisters!

Has a 13th pick every been lucky enough to land in the first three? Say we end up in the lottery, who would be a solid post that we could really use at #13?

Here I come to add less confusion to to the daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay...

The 1001st combination doesn't matter. If it pops up, it gets chunked and the combination is re-picked.
