If he does not recover from his rehab next season, can the rockets still trade him with his expiring contract if he doesn't play?

yeah if the mavs and lakers were able to sign and trade players they had the right too....let alone if these players were inactive you can easily trade an injured player.

it doesnt happen often but i am sure there will be many people calling morey this time next year asking about mcgrady healthy or not

You can trade a injured player I believe, just up to the other team to accept it.

He can be traded, and if he is out all year, and deemed to be out by NBA doctors the Rockets can get a nearly $12 million dollar medical exception.

Although it is not easy to get, the Rockets have gotten one before for Sura I think.

Isn't t-mac valuable either way next season (I know I know, surprisingly, lol). As an expiring contract even if he's injured? Or if he manages to get in shape and actually come back maybe we can trade him still. Either way, get him off the team.

Bold prediction: McGrady will play this year.

The Rockets will convince him that he'll be put in a very awkward position if the team advances past the first round without him. He'll realize the risk to his reputation that could bring, and he'll suck it up and rejoin the team near the end of the season.

Bold prediction: TMac will not be able to walk properly when the playoffs come due to microfracture surgery that requires a lot of time to rehab

    It won't be that much.

Disabled Player Exception: Allows a team that is over the cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player who will be out for either the remainder of that season (for in-season injuries/deaths) or the next season (if the disability occurs during the offseason). The maximum salary of the replacement player is either 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less. This exception requires an NBA-designated doctor to verify the extent of the injury.

Bold prediction: McGrady will cry again come this post-season...

...because his team will advance past the second round without him.

They can certainly trade him if another team wants to take on a $23M contract. Since it's expiring, I expect they would. It might be a little harder to do during the summer, but at the deadline I would imagine the Rockets would be able to pick the offer that they think is the best.

If I remember correctly, Sura was effectively retired his last year, but the Rockets kept him around so they could use his expring contract in any deals they may have wanted to pursue. I don't think they ever found anyone, but that was always a possibility. You're basically just sacrificing a roster spot for future cap space.

I thought it was half of the injured player's salary. But I now see the "whichever is less' clause. That makes it $5.3M.

Or half the league average....I keep forgetting that....lol.....you guys are right.

But NikeStrad says it is very hard to get one, and that the NBA doctors have to declare him out all year.....so, it may be moot, but I am sure the organization will at least try.

I read it as 1/2 the players salary OR the average salary(full), not 1/2 the players salary or 1/2 the average salary.

Anybody know what the average NBA salary is?

In an ironic way, this seems likely. Every time I think the drama is over, an even bigger twist comes. It's likely to happen, because it's so unlikely...if that makes sense.
