I received this e-mail and it indicates that Clear Channel Communications, which owns 85% of all American radio stations, has chosen to ban dozens of songs on their playlist. If this is true, then it further indicates that we are moving into a dark time for the American freedoms that we are said to be fighting for at the moment. I could see a certain ammount of sensitivity about certain content at this moment, but this is insane. And a lot of the songs on the list actually protest violence. Here is the report and banned songlist that I recieved. Can anyone confirm this? From Radio Undercover: Clear Channel radio network calls Beatles, Elton John and others lyrically questionable American radio network Clear Channel has removed songs by The Beatles, Elton John, Queen and U2 from their playlist after last Tuesday's World Trade Center attack. Songs considered "lyrically questionable" by Clear Channel programmers include The Beatles 'A Day In The Life', Elton John's 'Rocket Man', Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust'and U2's 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. Clear Channel are the world's largest radio network and have recommended 150 songs be withdrawn from their radio network playlists. Also on the list, The Bangles 'Walk Like An Egyptian', Jerry Lee Lewis 'Great Balls Of Fire' and Kansas 'Dust In The Wind' have been taken off the air. Clear Channel own radio stations all over the world and control the Australian Radio Network with major ownership of stations MIX and WSFM in Sydney and MIXFM and GOLD FM in Melbourne. ****** Clear Channels List of Songs with Questionable Lyrics Artist Title Drowning Pool "Bodies" Mudvayne "Death Blooms" Megadeth "Dread and the Fugitive" Megadeth "Sweating Bullets" Saliva "Click Click Boom" P.O.D. Oh crap, this is crazy! They're falling into the trap that these terrorist want. Not only do they want the United States out of the Middle East, they want the United States to be closed off, paranoid, and giving up their freedoms. I agree with some freedoms, especially when it comes to security, but this garbage that Clear Channel is pulling is straight up BS.
It's another case of "paranoia, paranoia, everybody's coming too get me...." Surprises me that "Flagpole Sitter" isn't on there, in that case. That would take off an inordinant amount of good songs. And they (record industry) wanted to control their trade on the Internet....fat chance of that. There's a point when you've gone too far. This is way beyond that, if true.
I also wanted to ask if anyone else heard the rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd "tuesdays gone" with quotes from the tragedy mixed in. It was very very good, it brought a tear to my eye. I ask because i see that song on the list
In-f**ing-sane. It sounds like something they'd do, though, removing any song about war or fire or planes or death or bombs or destruction or unhappiness... or happiness, either, or certain places from their playlists. Never mind that some of these songs may actually be therapeutic and express what most of us are feeling. And their playlists were already so limited... they've probably got about two songs left on each station now. My opinion of corporate radio is not fit to be expressed on this BBS.
is this a hoax or a joke? if not, perhaps it's just temporary? if none of the above, then that is just stupid.
Bangles "Walk like an Egyptian" Van Halen "Jump" REM "It's the End of the World as We Know It" Oh hell no. Three great 80's songs just taken off the air. I'm not gonna stand for that. At least they left Madonna untouched (no pun intended). Just noticed CCR "Travelin' Band". Oh hell no again. Seriously though, are they crazy.
wait a second. i thought you said it was full of damn good music. at least i didn't see any bob dylan there, hehehe. seriously at first i thought this list was way fake but if so somebody went to a lot of trouble to list that many songs. this could be real scary if true. i'm still not convinced however...
I am 100% with you RM95 -- I quickly looked to see what DMB songs got hit . . . Just waiting for them to take away Ants Marching or I Did It . . .
The free market will take care of this problem. Spread the word, and ratings and advertisers will take care of the rest.
If this is true, then it further indicates that we are moving into a dark time for the American freedoms that we are said to be fighting for at the moment. While I agree that the censorship is bad, this has nothing to do with our freedoms. Privately owned radio stations can choose to play what they want to -- that's their freedom. If they don't feel comfortable playing a particular song, that's their choice. It's not like the government is forcing radio stations to stop playing them. If people want to hear those songs, CC's competitors will play them and it will siphon business away from CC. I think this is a perfect example of how the free market works.
In many markets, though, there aren't any Clear Channel competitors, at least not for many formats. Radio isn't a free market (and never really has been), especially not when one company owns and dominates the industry so much.

If they don't think it going to severely hurt them they are fooling themselves. You can bet I will listen to CC's competitors, and a lot of people will follow. Some songs may be wrong, but this is over doing it. They may not be taking away our freedom, but they are taking away their own freedom, because if they pull these songs, they will have to ban future songs that are even close to the songs they pulled, and that puts them in a SERIOUS bind. Their problem I guess. But what about the areas that DON'T have an option other then Clear Channel?
I find it hard to believe that they have done so. I sent an email to the program director at "Mix 96" in Houston to see if he can provide further information. I'll post his response if/when I get it.
