If there were a draft to fight in Iraq, would you:
go willingly and proudly, go begrudgingly, only because it is illegal not to, fight it as an objector, or go to Canada.
I'm too old to get drafted but if I wasn't, I would fight it tooth and nail as an objector.

    Let the flaming begin.

It doesn't matter for me, I'm too old and I already pulled 10 years as one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. And besides, would I really want to be an ossifer, since with a college degree and my service time they would send me down that career path? Hell no.

I'm with the "justified cause for war" side. I'd go if it was justified and fight begrudgingly, if not, I'm jumpin in the objector wagon.

    For me...

Honorably and Proudly. And I will say that with my last breath.

True, I was an Army brat for the first 17 yrs of my life.

Also true, I choose this citizenship when I turned 18 (one year after I arrived here).

And very true, there is no other country on this planet that I would want to live in or die for.

And it goes without saying, I'm not a politician or a philosopher, nor a leader of men.

But what I am, in the most truest sense, is a soldier. You would want me watching your back. And that's a fact.

    So yes, honorably and proudly.

I would go willingly and proudly. Why? Because I have *respect* for those who have answered the call to duty in the past. I *respect* those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. These are the people who have enabled the lifestyle that I currently live and have preserved the freedoms which all Americans enjoy. Refusing the call of duty is a direct insult to these people. It is tantamount to digging up the dead bodies of courageous veterans who were killed in action and then urinating on them.

if you have that much *respect* why wait for a draft? go enlist or sign up for the reserves.

i don't think there should be a draft. we're supposed to be a country where individuals choose their own path. Forcing someone to kill another person doesn't seem right to me.

flat feet, so they wouldnt want me anyway. but for me to really fight, the enemy would have had to have done damage to our country first, otherwise it just doesn't seem right.

Way to sully the thread there buddy. You could have stopped right before this sentence and we would have gotten your point. Only a really sick individual could dream up such a thing as an exclamation point to an arguement. You should be
    ASHAMED.

It would have to be a good reason for needing a draft to fight a war AWAY from the homeland. Needing a draft would mean that something bad was happening, so, if those conditions are met, then I would go-unless it was obvious that our leaders had gone mad.

If the Iraq war is such a noble cause, go enlist. Why wait until the government orders you to go? If it's worth risking other people's lives, it must be worth risking your own.

    Other priorities, I guess.

I have nothing but respect for the soldiers over there, and nothing but contempt for the administration who put them there in the first place. Protecting America's homeland is one thing; protecting decomposed fossils in a desert half-way around the world is quite another.

Yeah, the supporters of this war don't need a draft. Go enlist and help George Bush (unless you've already served, then serve up your children), otherwise you are urinating in the wind.

If drafted, I would serve because that's the law and all. But I wouldn't like it (and at 32, I'm not going to be drafted anyway).

I do think, however, that if the draft does end up being reinstated, it won't be for long. Such a move would quite possibly be the most unpopular thing the Congress and President could do.... and now that we know a lot of states have recall mechanisms, I don't think we'd have any trouble using them against anyone who voted to send our kids away to fight against their will in an already-teetering-on-unpopular war.

Reinstating the draft would be, in my opinion, political suicide in this era.

Not at all surprised by Jorge's answer. Any opportunity to bolster the bad reputation of the D&D. Sincerity be damned. He doesn't mean it, folks. "He's only joking..." "He's just trying to get your goats..." No big deal.

I'm surprised by rimrocker's answer though. No judgment on it or anything, but I wouldn't have guessed that. I know that you don't believe in this war, rimrocker. I don't have any trouble understanding the impulse to serve the country whether you agree or not, but I just can't see you shooting a stranger in the name of a cause you deeply disagree with.

You must have gleefully typed that last sentence... "Oh! this'll get them in a lather!"

Where was all the "patriotism" on your part when you were all for "urinating" on veterans benefits?? You relish hypocrisy, don't you. Enjoy.

I remember September 12, 2001 pretty clearly. We had just been attacked and the 24 hour a day blitz of commercial free shots of the twin towers falling was entering its second day. I was understandably upset on many levels. Aside from the obvious, I had been laid off for three months and had three interviews scheduled (and cancelled) for that week.

That was also the day that I vowed that if there were a draft, I would go sign up even though they wouldn't draft me due to my age. I seriously considered signing up for months afterwards as we deliberated, negotiated, and ultimately invaded Afghanistan. I was so proud of President Bush for going in and kicking Taliban a$$es that I just can't explain it. I was gung-ho and it took my wife talking me down a couple of times to keep me from going to see a recruiter (even at my age, there aren't many who understand computers and communications than I do so I was convinced I could be of use).

The circumstances since then have changed so dramatically that today, I voted for "Oh Canada" because I do not trust the administration anymore. I fully support the troops, have sent care packages to anonymous units, and will cheer them when they return. I mourn the loss of each one and pray every night for their safety.

I was the most gung-ho supporter of the war in Afghanistan that you can imagine. The actions of the administration now make me glad that I didn't sign up and those actions would also cause me to hie northward if I were called up. It has nothing to do with supporting the troops, but everything to do with despising how the administration has treated me, the truth, and America's ideals.
