If there is a (basketball) God, the Lakers won't win the championship.

I have been a Lakers fan for many years. From "show time" with my favorite player( not named Hakeem Olajuwon) James Worthy to this past three-peat team led by Shaq and Kobe, I've always loved them. I've defended the Lakers when people said the league was biased towards them, and I've rolled my eyes at those who say the refs lean in their favor. Last summer I was even excited when I heard they were getting Gary Payton and Karl Malone...... Karl Freakin' Malone. How could I have ever been that dumb?
Now don't get me wrong, I will always the love the Lakers teams of the past, and probably in the future, but this year's team does not deserve the title. Obviously, one could say who ever scores the most points deserves the title, but the way this team has played, relying on just talent, or even just the existence of some past talent to give the referees a reason to blow the whistle in their favor when no foul has been committed, is not the way you want a champion to play. In the past, the Lakers have worked hard for their titles, they played tough defense, and they ran beautiful offensive plays, they played with heart (see 2000 WCF 15 pt. comeback against Blazers). While they still have players who do this in spurts, they have almost coasted this post-season, floating on the whistles of careless referees who look more at reputation than the play on the court.
I can not cheer for this team. They act as if the trophy already belongs to them. Whenever a whistle is blown against them, they act as if that is an impossibility. Instead of guarding their man tightly, they have chosen the easy way out, and flopped on the floor , knowing they will get the call. This is not the way basketball should be played. This leads me in to the other reason why the Lakers , hopefully, will not win. Karl Malone. Karl Malone has always been lauded for his hard work and determination, but however much he is dedicated, his play on the court wipes all of that away. It is not "old school" to hit someone in the back, or elbow someone in the face when they are not looking. Karl Malone is the dirtiest player in the league, and it boggles my mind that he has not been suspended for his actions. If someone did on the street, what he has done on the court during the playoffs, they would be in jail. Karl Malone does not deserve to wear the same kind of ring that Bill Russell, Jerry west, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, James Worthy Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O'neal wear. They won the right way, if he gets a ring, it will be tainted for the simple fact that it is on his finger, because he doesnt know how to win the right way.
So I hope the Pistons will be ready for a tough fight against the Lakers, their fans, and sadly, now the referees. But if there is a basketball god, I dont think he will let this year's Lakers beat a team with players such as Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton, and Chauncey Billups, who have worked hard to climb out of the basketball abyss and prove their critics and doubters wrong. The NBA needs a champion with integrity , something that is non-existent for the most part (no problem with Gary Payton) in the 04' Lakers squad. Go Pistons !!!

Umm, if a team wins four games in the first round.

    And four in the second.

And another four in the third round, and again in the final round.

Well, then that team "deserves" to win the championship.

before reading the first post i would have disagreed... but dc rock that was very convincing.

i mean mine will be the minority opinion. but i guess i'd like to see the Lakers win because their team dynamic is so interesting. when there's no sense of urgency, they will come out flat and lose. but when they need to win they go out and find a way.

karl malone is a shadow of his former self. can't dunk, got stuffed by garnett a million time last series. but you know however dirty it is, he is doing whatever it takes for his ultimate goal. and while it may not be respectable... in a sense i respect him for being able to do whatever it takes. morally i have no objection to his play.

as far as the lakers getting all the calls... minnesota got a lot of calls in game six... i'm not sure the refs are 100% responsible for the Lakers winning.

I'm rooting for the Pistons, but c'mon, the Lakers have the two best players in the world. They deserve the title. And they took the road through Houston to get it. We are the one team nobody wanted to face. Then they went through the champs. Then they went through the MVP.

...Then Karla tried his sh*t against the Wallace Boys and got his 40-year-old ass handed to him. I hate the Fakers. War Pistons.

What gets me is how the "media" keeps applauding Malone on his great defense. I would look great on Duncan and KG too if my teammates doubled down 70% of the time.

I am an atheists when it comes to basketball. ;)

I commend you for your integrity. You are a rarity among Lakers fans.

I've always been a Lakers hater, way before Malone joined the team. I knew the Lakers were going to coast once they got past the Spurs. That's why I knew the Malone haters who rooted against San Antonio were so WRONG. They thought Minnesota would take care of the Lakers. No chance. If the defending champ couldn't beat the Lakers, you think the refs would let a small market team beat them?

Some of them say, even if the Lakers win, Malone's title will always be tarnished because he wins it as a role player. Wrong again. Malone is an integral part of this team. He is their #2 rebounder, #3 scorer, #2 in steals, #3 in assists. He does all the big and little things (yes, including his trademark dirty plays) to help them win. He is not their best player. But they (Shaq and Kobe) can't win without Malone. Last year has already proved that. This year in the regular season, they were 33-9 (.786) with Malone and 23-17 (.575) without him.

I can almost hear the media say after they win it all, "Malone cares about winning more than money. He is humble enough to defer to Shaq and Kobe and does all that are needed to win, just like what Robinson did with Duncan. Blah blah blah. . . " [Puke] To add insult to injury, after he gets his ring, he can concentrate on breaking the scoring record. He is going to get the two things he wanted most for his career. [Puke]

Malone's playing for the Lakers is the biggest cheat in his life, above and beyond all the terrible cheats he's done. Yes, if they win, there is no basketball god. There is no justice.

He even addressed that in his initial post...

I've always been a Lakers hater, but you're right...in the past, the teams actually played hard. After they signed Kobe/Karl, it seemed like the title was pretty much inevitable. No sense of urgency besides the Spurs series, and even then, they pretty much relied on talent rather than coming together as a team to rally back. Doesn't hurt that the Spurs second best player disappeared either.

    Go Pistons.

Malone - aside from the elbows and kicking, he pushes on a player all night to prevent them from getting position. The only way a player can respond is to lean into his pushing. That's when he steps back and lets the player fall down. And the refs let him get away with it.

Kobe - I don't know if you noticed this or not, but Kobe dribbles with one arm and clears with the other. There'd be a lot more people shooting like Kobe in the NBA if they, too, were allowed to stiff-arm people with their free arm. That' ain't legal either, but the refs let him get away with it.

Shaq - the rules don't call charge if a defender is inside the under-hoop arch, but shaq regularly plows over people who are outside the arch. When he gets 5 fouls, that's actually good for the lakers 'cause they know that no more fouls will be called against him for the rest of the night. With 5 fouls, he can hack, trip, body slam and whatever else he wants, and the refs let him get away with it.

It's not alone just bad that these players get away with this crap. It's that the refs will let ONLY the Lakers get away with it.

I used to only hate the Jazz, but this year's Lakers have really got me hating 'em. I, too, hope that, by some miracle, God points his finger at Detroit.

Ok when did that become illegal? That's just good defense.

KG does that WAAAAAAYYYYYYY more than Kobe, and KG only got called twice on that the whole series!!! Kobe may be guilty of that but there are so many more players you could point to that do it much worse

Shaq gets away with a lot no doubt, but the refs easily stay their whistle on his opponents more than any other player in the NBA. Just because a player hacks or holds Shaq and it doesn't affect him, doesn't mean it's not a foul.
