You think if the Rockets in the 80s didn't implode with Sampson's knees and the drug related issues that they would have been a dynasty? I know people on here agree with that sentiment, but that's not my real question.

You think if the 80s Rockets became a dynasty and still won their 2 rings in the 90s, that Hakeem would have arguably been regarded as GOAT? I think definitely at Center no contest, but I'm curious if say the Rockets won 3 in the 80s like a dynasty and then assume they cooled off and won 2 more like in 93-95 whether Hakeem would be more highly regarded. What if question I know, but I think a stronger case could be met then.

If Dawson had drafted Michael Jordan instead of Dream, would we have a dynasty in the 80s? who knows
If an alien arrived in houston and gave a magic mank to Dawson, would he use the mank to make les well off and persuade the mean boss to spend more money on rosters' salary? who knows.
If Dawson had Drafted Stoudmire instead of Yao with the 1st ovl pick in 02, would our team rely on fast-break like the suns? who knows?
If the owner of our team was a little bit more generous or even as crazy as cuban, would he build a luxury rockets team? who knows.
If Dawson hadn't traded cat franchise and cato for tmac+Juwan+lue+gains, would our rocekts win a championship in the years to come? who knows.
If this thread hadn't been posted, would other members start such a garden talk? who cares.

If you didnt post, would anyone care? No

Your attempt at being a "badass" poster failed.

The guy asked a legit question, and brings up a valid argument.

They would have dominated for years.....Ralph and Dream were amazing, but Lew Lloyd, black Gold...was so much fun to watch in the open court...long strides and could change direction during his stride.....

I've thought about this a lot.

I think we could have won a few championships in the late 80s and early 90s, BUT the question I always go back to is, would Hakeem been as good as he was/is with Sampson on the team?

I think Hakeem wouldn't have been as good. I think the struggles Hakeem went through after Sampson went down and then ultimately traded made him a better player. It frustrated him, of course, but out of that frustration he found renewed himself with religion and finally trusted his teammates when he got teammates he could trust.

Are you saying that he became Muslim because of being frustrated with basketball? I have no idea, but that sounds highly questionable or poorly worded.

if you guys had watched Vintage NBA: Ralph Sampson like I told you guys, you'd know that Dream LOVED playing with Ralph. He had smile and said it was wonderful playing with him. Ralph helped Dream in his transition to the NBA off the court as well as complemented his play on the Court. Ralph preferred playing more of a small forward/power forward game than being in the middle.

Dream was frustrated that he lost some of the best players he's played with. Ralph was an ALL STAR no doubt before injury.

I second that - Dream, Stickman, Sweet Lou, Cool Hand Luke and McCray with (Mitchell, Reid & Peterson (Jim not Gene) on the bench - even if we did have to play Alan Leavell with his ludicrous free throw attempts) was probably the best Rockets team ever assembled...until now! IMO, Ralph would have been a top 50 of all time if not for his knees. How can you defed a 7'4" power forward who can run the point? ;)

Of course - the '93-'94 and the '94-'95 team did win it all, but if I had to pick a favorite team before looking at the final results - I would probably pick the '85-'86 team. If they didn't have to play Bird and the "best starting 5 ever" and quite possibly "the deepest team ever" we might - no scatch that - probably would have at least 3 (possibly more) Championships!

    Exactly.

It was clear during the Lakers series that Dream was the better half of the twin towers, which surprised many people. Sampson was supposed to be the more polished one. But Dream surpassed him in such a short time.

Dream never really struggled alongside Sampson. Sampson was a guard in a center's body. Dream was a center in a PF's body. They complimented each other very well.

That 86 Team defeated the Lakers and defeated them emphatically. The last second shot was just icing on the cake.

That Lakers team of the 80s went to the finals 7 times and won 4 times.

Still the ultimate what if question for real Rocket fans.

Dream would have been considered the greatest if he had played for Lakers, Knicks or Celtics, even without a championship. Patrick Ewing got all that pup because he played for the Knicks. Don't get me wrong he was real good but not as great as he's considered.

As I said before Dream played against centers that were considered some of the greatest and beat them all.

as someone posted a long time ago, there is a rumor of a trade of sampson for the the 3rd pick and clyde, which could meant 3 of the best players ever to play in the same team.

    yeah, what if......

If Dawson traded Sampson for the 2nd pick in 1984 with the Trailblazers and select Michal Jordan, We would have Dream and Jordan. That must be a dynasty, but it didn't happened. Yesterday is history; Why not look forward to our next season.
