Does the addition of Ewing and subtraction of Grant, Foster, Stepania and Maxwell make them a favorite to be in the playoffs over Sacramento, Houston, and Dallas?

If so, assuming the top 6 in the West are back again, that leaves SAC, HOU and DAL to battle for the right warm up the Lakers for round 2 of the playoffs.

The deal is far from done yet, but assuming it goes through, which is the premise, I think they are clearly a better team than the Rockets.

    Ewing/McCoy
    Baker/Oyedeji/Wolkowski
    Lewis/Patterson/Borrell
    Barry/Mason
    Payton/Williams/Davis

The Sonics are said to be looking for a trade with Vancouver for Othella Harrington which could involve Patterson.

    Ewing/McCoy/Oyedeji
    Baker/Harrington/Wolkowski
    Lewis/Borrell
    Barry/Mason
    Payton/Williams/Davis

A solid starting 5 with Harrington, Williams, McCoy, and Mason coming off the bench. Wow. I like that team over Minnesota. Even if only the Ewing trade went through, I still like that team to grab the 5th seed.

Not a Sonics fan, myself, my only point is that they would be favored to make the playoffs which would indicate only one left for the Rockets to compete for.

As fun as being an up and coming team is, it really sucks to be an up and coming team in the West. [IMG]

Here's the question I have: What are the chances Ewing won't end up on the IR for a significant portion of the year? If he gets hurt, the Sonics could very well be in trouble.

I'd disagree. My opinion on grading the matchups from 1-10, 10 being best possible.

    PG: Payton/whoever 10 / Francis/Norris 9
    SG: Barry/Mason 6 / Anderson/Mobley 8
    SF: Lewis/Patterson 6 / Williams/Langhi 5
    PF: Baker/Oyedeji 7 / Taylor/Thomas 7
    C: Ewing/McCoy 7 / Olajuwon/Cato 8

I do not see the Sonics clearly being a better team.

I see more mismatches in favor of Houston.

    Francis
    Mobley
    Taylor

    vs.

    Payton
    Baker

If Sea subtracts those players and adds only Ewing, then no.

It does not lock them into the playoffs.

BTW, Ewing is already pretty ugly, but I think Ewing would look awful in a Sonic uniform.

Why does Ewing want out of NY so bad? Why does Seattle want him? Cap reasons?

I think it's a disgrace what they have done to him.

He still thinks he's worth $13 million a year and Knick management knows better. Despite what he's done for the franchise and the city, he's made his money and needs to put things into perspective.

actually the Hakeem/Cato vs. Ewing/McCoy is more like 9-6 in favor of the Rockets. Hakeem always has his way with Ewing, poking the ball away from him and making him turn the ball over and Cato is much more of a presence than McCoy is. I was a fan of Jelanis when he was in college, but he is just no match at all for Cato. Besides, who knows, maybe Ewing will pull a Pippen?

Im from NY, and i gotta say that ewing is not a complete hasbeen. i am sick of him in NY, and woul;d be glad to see him go(except that it would hurt my beloved rockets chances at the playoffs) ewing is definately dealing with a love hate thing in NY, and pretty much 70% of the fans think the knicks are better without him. as far as how much he would help out the sonics, all i can say is never underestimate a wounded animal. ewing is hall of fame, and he is healthy. he is currently a better player than Hakeem, and will likely put up 15/10 this year, maby more.

    but dont give up hope.
what id francais pulls a vince carter, and does his own super Soph thing, and Mobley continues to improve like he did his first 2 years. what if mo lives up to his potential, what if cato finally plays like we know he can. the wis can produce, and langhi will likely steaol some time from the vets.

the rockets COULD make the playoffs if they play all year like they did the last month of 2000, but with taylor, i think the ROX have a real shot at any of the last 4 spots.

Well, with seattle keeping baker and getting Ewing it improves them. But not with Baker leaving.
