Who should replace him? I'd want an ex-player to help develop some of the young guys. Preferrably I'd want a former Rocket and the only two that come to mind would be Mario Ellie and Calvin Murphy. I'd have to give the nod to Calvin since he seems like he'd be a good teacher and would not hesitate to tell them their mistakes. He seems like a players' coach and has been with the organization for a long time. Also, he'd probably welcome the opportunity.
Can't see JVG hiring Calvin. Mario would be great though but I doubt JVG would even do that. He knows how much Mario is loved here. He'd be asking to be booed out of town bringing back Mario as an assistant if he has trouble getting us out of the gates next season.
i would want mario ellie but JVG would never hire him. mario wants to be a head coach and is so lived in houston that at the first sign of trouble the fans would call for his head and want to promote ellie. I think JVG would rather him sign somewhere else as a headcoach so we can't even talk to him. He will bring in some guy that no one ever heard of.
At least for one year Mutumbo could retireand be the big man's coach. I am all in favour of Mario Elle being on our staff.
This probably won't get rave reviews here since some of us (me included) unrealistically suggest Kareem and others unrealistically suggest Dream. However, Clifford Ray has been successfully working in ORL with Dwight Howard and was just recently signed by the Celtics for their big men.
Elie is quite happy in GS (his first home) and I'm fairly certain he wouldn't leave there for the same position here. Now if we offered him the head coaching position, things would change of course.. (not that I think we should)
Just wondering if Hakeem would be interested on being a role model and trainer for emerging Yao. But i would think his religion is more important to Dream than anything else. I really wish Hakeem will contribute to his own ex-team. Just a thought guys!!
I also have high reguard for Hakeem but Yao is no longer a rookie in need of tutaledge. The rules have changed for the big men in the NBA and the only advice Hakeem could offer Yao at this stage is get better shooting guards around him. Having said that I wish we could replace Ewing for Hakeem!
