I don't know about you guys, but I'm worried about another World War starting here pretty soon. We already know Clinton will do anything for political gain -- see his bombing during the Paula Jones trial, and just recently, his total flip-flop on the oil thing. What if it starts to look bad for Gore coming down to the wire? What lengths will Clinton go to to insure that his man comes out on top? I think it's a legitimate question. It looks like Gore is learning well, as evidenced by the ridiculous lies he's thrown out in this campaign. So, what do you think?

By the way, I'm leaving tomorrow for the left coast for vacation for a week! When I get back, the Rockets might be here in Austin! See ya! The Austin Rocket Fan Society's first meeting is only a little more than a month away!

When Republicans asked Clinton to release oil from the strategic reserve, Clinton opposed it because it merely because people were arguing that their SUVs weren't drinking enough gas for their 8 mpg.

People are about to freeze to death now. It's kind of different... and not a 'flip flop'.

On a brighter note, I played in 6-8" of snow today. [IMG]

    TheFreak,

I don't think he would bomb anyone. I would hope.

You do bring up an interesting point that hasn't been stressed much -- one of confidence. Through his actions, including his bold faced, finger-wagging lie to the public, Clinton has caused the public to loose much of the faith they had in the presidency. It has caused a cloud of distrust to surround this administration, which is now haunting Gore.

The bombing of terrorists who killed U.S. citizens wouldn't have been criticized at another time -- it probably would have been applauded. But with a president immersed in scandal, in the middle of a trial, it became something questionable. And, not only here, but with people in other countries, who questioned the motivation. And that's not the only question mark -- many of his other actions have been questioned, as to whether they were designed to distract from scandal, or repair his "legacy."

Including the latest -- the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). This has become a lightning rod for questions -- Is it truly beneficial, or a political maneuver? Gore hasn't helped this at all with his recent misstatements and outright lies -- even with the issue of pharmaceuticals, with the example of his mother and her dog, he admitted that he invented the example to make the point he wanted to make. That leads to questions on other issues -- Does he believe what he is saying, or is he telling the public what he thinks they want to hear?

IMHO -- on this issue. Clinton and Gore speak to each other constantly. Gore would never have come up with this without talking to Clinton first -- they are excellent political strategists. They both knew exactly what Clinton was going to do -- there was no bold request by Gore, to which Clinton responded the next day. They scripted this out in advance, in order to give Gore the chance to show his ability to dictate policy. If it wasn't political, Clinton would have just quietly released the oil.

I'm just wondering if the Bush camp is rallying the drug dealers in the D.C. area to get some support. They'll just show how the area's drug merchants will benefit from having a cokehead in office.

That's about as realistic as what this entire post is about.

DC: This may be true of Republicans but they never trusted Clinton. I remember seeing an "Impeach Clinton" bumper sticker two months after he was elected into office. I was shocked!

Most of the people I know, even some of my Republican friends, don't distrust the presidency but they DO distrust government in general but it has less to do with Clinton's lying than it does with politics in general and the coverage they receive on TV and in the paper.

TV news magazines, news papers and television news have become so invasive that all the dirty laundry that is out there is in full view. In pursuit of the latest scoop, reporters will pay thousands for stories.

In the 60's, Kennedy's exploits in the White House were legendary but the media never reported them. No one would help or believe Woodward and Bernstein (they were cub reporters at the time) when Watergate surfaced. They were forced to get proof.

Things have changed dramatically in the past 30 years and that is as much responsible for the mistrust of politicians as their actions. In fact, many "old-school" politicians have remarked how no one used to ask about their vacation homes or kids' college tuition until recently. Now, suddenly, it is front page news.

Besides, considering the fact that in a recent study, 65% of men admitted to cheating on thier spouse and 40% of women, none of us should be surprised or freaked out over it. Guess how many of those 65% lied to coer it up.

    Jeff,
I think the bumper sticker read, "Impeach Clinton, and her husband."

Interesting sentiment, but technically it would be incorrect. Hillary has always gone by her pre-marriage name of Rodham.

It wasn't until Bill's bid for the presidency that she was forced to tack on the "Clinton" to appease all the men who were scared to death of her "anti-family" values.

    Jeff,

I didn't really complete the thought on Clinton. I'll try to give the short version, as it applies to this thread. [IMG]

Clinton can lie to his wife all he wants. He didn't have to do the finger wagging speach in which he intentionally "mislead" or "lied" depending on who you talk to.

The thing was, even when he was caught in the lie, he never admitted to it -- he dodged the issue, trying to apply a strict legal deffinition that no ordinary person would use -- 'oral sex isn't sex -- sorry you misunderstood'. He compounded it later with other backward and evasive statements -- like questioning the deffiniton of the word "is."

We shouldn't have to break down every statement to figure out what our president is or isn't saying. The incidents surrounding the Lewenski thing, and the entire way he handled it after he was caught, causes doubt to be cast on everything else he says.

R95 -- perhaps you can explain why this is an idiotic topic. The man has already orchestrated one politically-motivated bombing (if you're as naive as you are liberal, you may not agree, I suppose), I don't see what is so far-fetched about speculating that he may do it again. He's already proven that he'll do anything for political gain. Gee, I thought you'd at least be a wee bit appreciative that I plugged the organization you founded shortly after the last NBA season ended.

Almu -- since I don't listen to Jim Rome regularly, I'm not sure what "jock-riding" is. Perhaps you could explain that one.

Achebe -- right, things are different now, there's an important election coming up.

    I'm back from vacation.

Freak, I'm just not blinded by my hate of any person to believe that they'd bomb a country for personal gain.

Maybe I'm naive, but I'll just give the guy the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Freak: Oh, and Reagan and Bush didn't? What exactly do you think the Gulf War was? I also remember Syria getting hammered too. Grenada anyone?

dc: I definitely see your point and don't condone the actions, but it is our fault that politicians lie in the first place and none of us should be naive enough to believe that some of them don't because they all do.

We set up a system where a politician must be above reproach for them to get our vote. In our system, it is one strike and you're out. Sleep around? Have a foot fetish? Eat too much? Drink a bit too much? Gay? Don't like broccoli? Whatever, you get drilled by someone.

That is the nature of the business and it is one that we created.
