If I were the coach... In the final 4-3 minutes in the 4th quarter, only Tracy or Yao should be taking shots... unless someone is WIDE OPEN on the perimeter. Keep it going... If I were the coach...
I would pressure more in the back court. Double team a little bit less while focusing more attention on the perimeter shooters. I would also be vocal and speak up to the officals when they call BS fouls..maybe get a T if it doesnt hurt the team in terms of points...
start vin baker for game 5 after seeing hardly any playing time the mavericks have no scouting on him and all he would have to do is on the first dirk drive in the game foul dirk hard and then go out and come in the second quarter and do the same and on and on
I would tell Yao to avoid any contact on the defensive end in the first quarter. Let the drivers go, do not help on defense, back off when the dribble drive comes his way. He's got to get to the 2nd quarter without a foul. I would then feed him the ball in the first quarter and tell him he has to get up at least 6 shots in that quarter. I don't care what they are, layups, or 18 footers. But he's got to get up at least 6 shots minimum. I would also run Ryan and Scottie in and out as often as possible for offense and defensive purposes starting at the opening tip. Anytime there is a clock stoppage, I would insert Scottie for offense and Bowen for defense. I would make Sura and James pick up the dribble when they got on the wings and wait for Yao to establish position for the dump in. When Dallas goes small with Dirk on Yao, I would require everyone besides Tracy to get the ball into Yao on every possession. If they failed to get it into Yao, I would bench them and bring in somebody else. If Yao failed to post up right in the middle of the paint when Dirk is in the game, I would yell and scream and throw a fit at him until he did. I would make Yao post up right at the lower circle in the middle of the paint and get the entry pass to him right from the top of the key. Yao then cannot pass out of there, he is required to face and shoot. I would take Yao out at the beginning of the 2nd quarter for a blow and bring in Mutombo and tell him to keep going crazy defending the paint. I would then bring Yao back at about the 5-8 minute mark of the 2nd quarter, depending on how we are playing and tell him, he can only take one foul before the half and he has to put up at least 4 more shots before half. We then go into halftime with Yao with either zero or 1 fouls and 10 shots put up. In the first half, all my perimeter guys play straight up, in the jock defense, taking away the outside shots and forcing their players to drive the paint. We will allow a lot of layups in the 1st quarter due to the fact that Yao is avoiding contact but I would rely on TMac to help from the weakside on the drives and look for steals. In the 2nd quarter, we tighten up the outside pressure a little bit more and force the drivers into Deke. Deke should force them to take more pressured shots on the interior. And they will have to double Yao on the other end, because he is taking shots. In the 3rd quarter, Yao has to take another 5 shots minimum. I don't care what the shot dispersion is amongst the rest of the guys. They are smart enough to take good shots, but they have to get Yao at least 5 shots. Even if he is double teamed, he has to shoot at least 5 times. There is a free player roaming around on a double team that should go straight to the glass when Yao has the ball and look for the putback. Yao should take the shot, and let the open player stuff it back, just like Dallas is doing to us when Yao cheats to help out on D. Yao shouldn't be looking around for the double and hesitating and waiting to find the open spot up shooter at the 3 point line...........until he has taken the minimum 5 shots. In the 3rd quarter, Yao is to get more aggressive on the defensive end as well, and start challenging the penetration. Our perimeter defense should back off slightly to help with stopping penetration. Dallas is in the driving frame of mind now since they drove the paint with success in the first quarter, and they shouldn't have gotten the opportunity to get in rhythm from the perimeter yet, because we have been up in their face, forcing them to drive to their weak hand. Once again, spell Yao with Deke, except earlier, in the 3rd quarter, maybe 5 minutes in, and let Deke play at least 5 minutes. Bring Yao back in with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and end the quarter feeding the post. At the start of the 4th quarter, bring Deke back for about 3 minutes to establish defensive intensity. By now, Yao should have made it to the 4th with 2 or less fouls. He is only allowed to pick up one in the first half, and he has put up 15 shots, and caused Dallas to adjust or torched them one way or the other. Bring Yao back in for the last 8 or 9 minutes of the game and let it all hang out. Maybe switch out Yao and Deke during the last possessions if foul trouble requires it. TMac should have free reign to take what he wants to during the entire game. He should have carte blanche on the offensive end. On the defensive end, he has to take Dirk when we go small with the guards, and play him at the 4. I actually think this is our best lineup against Dallas with Barry playing the 3. DWes has to take Finley and drape him like a blanket. And Mike James has to see more time against Terry. Terry is torching Sura. Sura can't hang with him. We may should try some James Sura backcourt for a few minutes to see if we have more luck with stopping Terry and putting pesky Sura on Finley. When they bring Stackhouse in, we should try Bowen on Stack and TMac on Dirk to see if Bowen can give Stack some trouble. The guards can't stop Stack. Really, the biggest thing that needs to happen is Yao needs to stay out of foul trouble by backing off all contact on the defensive end in the first half. And he has to put up at least 20 shot attempts or a combination of 20 shot attempts and fouls against him. If he does those 2 things, we win this series. It's that simple. Yao 20 shots TMac 25+ shots Everybody else gets the rest
I would get Deke to through a hard elbow at Dirk. If he is going to keep flopping a la Karl Malone, I think we should give him a good reason to fling his arms and hit the floor. That guy is getting way to many calls with his acting.
Oh yes, less double teaming... some of our players give a weak double team, so there isn't any point of it at times...
Yeah i wouldnt mind if James pressured Terry a little bit more in the backcourt just to eat a little bit more of the shot clock. I would also love it if JVG got a Tech. at some point in this series. Maybe we would get some more calls then.
If I were the coach, I would TELL Yao stop taking those charging fouls, and stop chasing after the opposing guards. Just stay in front of them. And for those coming into the paint, either stand or jump straight up WITHOUT bringing your arms down. If I were the coach, I would never put Mike stupid James in to bring up the ball when both T mac and Yao are on the floor. If I were the coach, I would make sure Yao getting more touches by inserting JB in the lineup at the same time. If I were the coach, I would be b****ing at those refs from the getgo. Only if I were the coach.
i would throw some chairs in the court to let know the ref that i am here and don't take me like a A$$HOLE making those stupid calls i would tell yao to don't take charge at least is a good one i would tell to J.BARRY,D.WESLEY,S.PADGETT,M.JAMES,T.McGRADY too throw the three when there opens so that would help yao get open only i would demand full court press in the 4 qrts and when they can doble team pick & roll on the person that got the ball made DEKE elbow DIRK,TERRY,FINLEY and some times BRADLEY let know dampier who's the second and the next best center in the NBA throw more chairs in the court to let know the ref that i am here and don't take me like a A$$HOLE making those stupid calls fight with the ref and the media to give us some credit drive a HUMMER and given to west coast to get a little PIMP style put myself in a diet i'm to fat for tv and then put myself in playing time to kick some @$$ and bring a championship baby maybe MVP preformance
Just what I have tried to write. Summary 1) Guards should defend better to prevent easy penetration by Flopperics. Yao tries to avoid contact with Flopperics in the first two quarters. 2) Give the damn ball to Yao.
If I were the coach ... In the 4th quarter, Yao would NOT be setting high screens. Send Yao to the post. Feed the post. Yao, take a high % shot, or get to the free throw line.
I would also start out running a zone in the first half to get the Mavs shooting more Jump shots, then switch over once they had established that they were going to shoot jumpers. DD
I'd tell Yao to back off of penetration from their gaurds.. kind of "pull the chair" in reverse.. i bet half of them drive just to try to get contact from Yao to get the foul.. Yao is so big just his presence will make them shoot an irregular shot. Yao still tries to block their shots straight up in front of the driver.. Deke lets the gaurd penetrate but angles his body so their bodies will not crash into each other.
1. Threaten to bench Yao for the rest of the series if he tried to take another charge (of course I would be bluffing) 2. Full court press after made freethrows (Dallas has suspect ball-handlers) 3. Fine the role players 1 game's salary if they take more shots than Yao AND shoot a lower %. 4. Attack the basket at least every other possession.
