Houston Rockets coach Stephen Silas referred to superstar James Harden's absence from training camp as a holdout on Monday and said there is "no timetable" he is aware of for the perennial All-Star guard to report.

After Harden missed Houston's first team workout Sunday, Silas cited the NBA's COVID-19 protocols as the reason the Rockets' face of the franchise could not practice with the team. However, Harden did not show up for an anticipated individual workout Sunday evening.

Harden, who sources say has requested to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets, has not communicated recently with Silas. A source told ESPN on Sunday night that Harden informed Rockets management that he would report soon, but Silas expressed uncertainty about when the 2017-18 NBA MVP would rejoin the team.

"There is no timetable, as far as I know," Silas said after Monday's practice. "It is a setback. You want your best player to be here."

Silas said he did not know whether Harden had returned to Houston. Harden posted pictures on Instagram over the weekend of him attending rapper Lil Baby's birthday party in Atlanta, and videos and pictures of Harden hanging out in Las Vegas nightclubs have circulated on social media in the past couple of days.

Soooo.... what to do IF this is Harden 'holding out' bc he doesnt want to honor his contract?

My optimism says 'we can still work this out...'
My common sense tells me - make a deal and recoup whatever we can...
but my emotions say - screw this dude! He's under contract and wants to force his way out... make life as hard as possible for him!

If Harden "holds out" he is going to be out without pay until he suits up or we get the best trade offer for him. Harden is still under contract for two more years...I don't think wasting the last of his prime years sitting out is in his best interest. The worst thing the Rockets can do is to be forced to accept a bad trade for Harden because he wants out. This is critical for the next decade of the franchise.

I agree... and I think it pisses me off even more that after all these off season moves, he could potentially be pulling this crap...

My expectation was that Harden would be a team player and honor his contract - to at least start the season... If the team comes together and plays well, then maybe he would forgo trying to leave... but if the team looks like a hot mess - then he would reiterate his desire to leave...
I think this would be a reasonable course of action... I wouldnt like it if it was the latter... but it would still be somewhat reasonable...

There is absolutely nothing the Rockets can do besides stop paying him which won’t effect harden as he has endorsement deals coming out of his ass or tear up his contract is exactly what he wants.

He has the Rockets by the proverbial Crown Jewels because it’s Tillman and the Rockets who can’t afford to not have a star attraction

Nothing, Rockets should listen to offers until they hear a good package.

I think when the season starts teams who are on the cusp of contending will get more desperate

I'm not sure how it works... but when Larry Sanders decided to sit out or retire, while still under contract, didnt the Bucks maintain his rights for the amount of time left on his contract?
IE if Harden says 'screw it, i aint playing...' when next year comes around - he's still under contract for 2 more years... since he wouldnt get 'credit' or pay - for the year he sat...
I could be totally wrong... so if someone has more insight - please offer it up... lol

The Rockets will need him or someone to replace his production so they will eventually have to trade him because they know can’t have him or someone who can give them his production sitting on the sidelines for two years.

It just makes no sense hence a trade will eventually happen.

Sit him, wait for the season, some fake contenders will play like ****, overreact and shake things the **** up. I can easily envision Clippers gettin spanked and sending us pg+someone for Harden. Same goes for Boston, Philly, Miami etc

More money to buy 2nd round draft picks... that's it. Harden isn't going to hold out all season anymore than Clowney/Hopkins/Bregman would hold out all season against their respective franchises.

Be nice but fine him......say we have to enforce the rules for everyone, we are not trading you, we want to see how this season goes - and we think with the new additions you might just change your mind.....

    And let it be.

You let him sit out without pay if that’s what he wants, then trade him at the deadline or next off season.

Eventually... sure... but if he's gonna kill his trade value by being a malcontent and not reporting... then let him sit. I think there will be better offers at the trade deadline or next off season...
but IF he doesnt want to report... and Tilman can with hold his pay... and we retain the 2 years he's still has under contract...
...then I'd be in no hurry whatsoever...

That’s why you have to trade him sooner then later. My point legally.

I dont understand what ur saying... lol...
What legal point are you making?
Why does he have to be traded sooner (if the offers are lesser) than later (if offers may potentially be greater)?
