Seriously, he should've slapped Morey across the face when he was offered 40mil/year. "are we trying to win here or get me paid?"
Kevin Durant is a snake...but he did take less money so gsw could retain Iggy & livingston help his chances to win & so he could get that illusive ring. I'm not sure if cp3 wants that illusive ring.
I did think at the time we should have let CP3 walk. We could have used that 40m a year to get 3 decent/good players in. I guarantee we would have been in a much better position than we're in right now.
But we couldn’t have because of our cap situation. Paul could have taken some off to make sure we brought back Ariza even if it was on a 1 year deal and used the MLE wisely. We need a trade and a buy out candidate
One of the problems is the contract should have been more back loaded in order to keep the team together 4 million redistributed to the span of the contract could have kept Ariza and Luc thats whats so sad about it
The $40 million was not actual available cap space, so no, it wouldn't have given the Rockets the ability to sign $40 million worth of contracts. Rockets would only have like $3 million of cap space without Paul's contract, which wouldn't be worth it anyways because they would have the MLE which is higher than that and it has a cap hold on it, so there would be no cap space even without Paul. I do wonder what amount of paycut he would have needed to take to make things work. The luxury tax this season is $123.7M. The Rockets salaries total to $133.7M. The Rockets luxury tax bill is $16.3M. Chris Paul is making $35.7M. To get the Rockets under the tax mark, he would have to make $10 million or more less. Kevin Durant is only on a two year contract, but he took a $9.5 million pay cut last season. I don't know what the teams luxury tax limit was, or what the limit on a contract for Ariza was, but if Paul signed a 4 year $100 million deal, which I'm not going to downplay, it is a $60 million paycut over the life his salary, so maybe that's too much, but that gives some more wiggle room if the Rockets could get to a workable number with Ariza. Maybe something like a $5 million paycut is more reasonable, 4 years / $120 million, but I don't know if that really makes much difference for the Rockets mentality in re-signing guys in that case.
no rational organization is letting CP3 just walk after giving up so much to get him and having taken GS to 7 games due in large part to his impact on the floor Rockets already had about 80 mil in guaranteed salary even if CP3 walks and the salary cap was at 101 mil...then u also add in things like Capela’s cap hold so we wouldn’t even have had 40 mil to spend, and now you’ve lost CP3 and can’t replace him
more like if Morey didn’t waste 20 mil on useless Ryno then we would’ve been in a much better position...he got rid of that toxic deal, but replaced him with Knight and Chriss who are useless/injured...so we still have 20 mil worth of potential production just wasting away on the roster we are paying Knight what many starters make to rehab and be our 4th guard/CP3 insurance
It astounds me the amount of people who talk coulda-woulda-shoulda, and don't grasp the actual situation this team was in cap wise.
people forget Ryno and his terrible contract is the one who ruined our title chances and who gave him that terrible contract? Morey.
Possibly, it's hard to know, do you think they give Ariza a one year $15 million contract if Paul took $5 million less?
