At first I was hoping WR C Rodgers would be the pick. After looking over our roster I don't think WR is our biggest need. Think about this, besides Gary Walker or Seth Payne who do we have on the D-Line? I can't remember the last time I saw another D-Lineman besides those two make a play. Games are won in the trenches and championships are won with defense. Therefore my vote would be for DT J Kennedy of Penn State. Add another DL that can get to the QB and our defense could be special.
there's only one other starting defensive lineman in a 3-4...plus, this is a defense where linebackers are generally the playmakers. i don't disagree that we could use some more quality defensive linemen...but i'd go after Rogers first, assuming he's available when we pick. a left tackle to replace boselli might be necessary too. oh..and another safety.
One safety to look at that will be there in the second round is Tory Holt's lil brother at NC State. Scouts say he runs a 4.5 and can hit like a linebacker.
I'd like Rogers because he looks great but realistically I think we take the best player available outside of QB. We need help just about everywhere.
I guess it would depend on what the free agent market looks like and if we could maybe sign a couple of big name FA 's.. Anyone know where you can find a list of FA 's ? ...but yea I agree adding linemen would be the best route.. then try to pick up some skill positions through free agency. Stacy Mack is a FA I'd like to nab him.
In a 3-4, the D-line shouldn't be making as many plays as in a 4-3 since there are less of them and their responsibilities are less proactive. The 3-4 is suppose to allow the LB's to make a lot of plays while the D-line ties up the blockers. The Texans will probably get at least one in the mid rounds barring a stud being available at DT. I am hoping for some O-line help early especially with Bosseli's status in flux. I'd like the Texans to maybe use two of first three picks here. 3-7 rds, I expect the Texans to get some secondary help with maybe some LBs for depth. If Rogers is available and it is expected he can make transition to NFL, he may be hard to pass up.
This is my thinking as well. Maybe in the 2004 or 2005 draft we can start drafting for need, but right now the team just needs to get as much talent as it can. It is safe to say that we are set at QB for a while. Outside of that, I don't think there is any other position that we can safely say we are "set" at. I just want another player on the team that can make a serious impact at his position.
Your right the problem is we only have two starting quality DL on our team. Gaffney and Bradford are going to be a very good tandem just give them time. Problem is there isn't a safety or OL worthy of the 1st pick were going to have IMO. I think we should be able to pick a decent OL in the second round. Of course we could always trade down. With the way this team is playing we probably wont have a very high draft pick for a while so trading down and getting two first round picks might be the way to go.
Rogers. Then in a blatant act of homerism...3 Aggies to solidify the defense: 1) Ty Warren (DL) 2) Jason Gamble (LB) 3) Terrence Kiel (S) If anybody has questions about these three guys, I can post bios with stats.
Terrence Kiel: Earned All-Big 12 mention after leading the Wrecking Crew in total tackles and solo tackles...is the Aggies' second- leading active tackler with 168 career stops...exceptional in run support, but is also strong against the pass as evidenced by his five career interceptions...started all 12 games in 2001 and has 22 career starts to his credit. Brian Gamble: Has started 34 straight games and 35 overall at inside linebacker over the past three seasons…is the team's active career leader in tackles with 241 stops…ranks as one of the top linebackers in the Big 12 Conference…has tremendous football savvy and is always around the ball…tough player who battled injuries in 2001 but did not miss a game. It's not like I suggested a couple of guys who ride the pine on what has been one of the better defensive units in college football.
1st round, If Rogers is there, I think its a no brainer. He is a stud. Then with the 2nd round pick I would go with a OL. 3rd round should be a safety. Then just add depth from there on.
I think the best athlete / playmaker should be drafted. Rogers is the best to me so far. I also like Jerod Penright in one of the later rounds.
Do you like Penright or Gamble better? Also we need an inside LB...outside LB seems to be taken care of. Isn't Penright more of an outside LB while Gamble is better suited to playing the inside? I could be mistaken.
I know you didn't reccomend scrubs, but there are better players to mention on that defense. Warren's a no-brainer, he's a beast, if enigmatic sometimes. Penright is a fantastic pass-rusher. I like Appel, don't ask me why, he won't be available this year, but he seems like he could be decent. But Kiel and Gamble? I don't think they'll make it in the pros.
I personally like Penright better. He played at Eisenhower high school which is down the street from where I live, but Gamble wouldnt be a bad pick either.
An O line stud... Face it, they're not talking but Boselli's not ever going to be Pro Bowl caliber again.
Gamble is a great athlete and he is young only a sophmore so he has another year I think (I don't think he redshirted). Problem with Gamble is I don't see him as a top 10 pick as either a WR or a CB (he can't/doesn't like to tackle, ala Deion Sanders). Maybe if a team is looking for a two-way player, but right now I think he is more of an athlete than a lottery pick. Great kid though. Be nice to see him become a top 10 pick after his senior year! Go Bucks!
Guys there is no O-lineman worthy of top 5 or so pick status. Odds are we won't have the number one overall pick and I bet Rogers may not be there when we do pick. I have to agree with some above comments. We have 2 good DL, take Jimmy Kennedy, I've been watching this guy play all year, he is a freak size wise and athletically. He's constantly double teamed but he always makes his way into the backfield. With Kennedy you're set, look for an OT in the free agency or later on in the draft. There is still the possibilty of Boselli coming back next year. If we do manage more wins than expected and end up in the 8-15 area of the draft I love Mike Doss. Guy just crushes people and never misses a tackle. Problem is he's a liability in coverage. My perfect offseason would be to draft him, then sign Brian Dawkins. He's nearing 30, but geez that guy just makes plays. Best safety tandem in the league then.
