Well, almost a decade to the month later... I had a credit card number (at least) stolen. I went online to print out a shipping label for a sale I made on ebay, and to my dismay, my PayPal debit card (Mastercard logo) had been used at a brick and mortar retailer... perhaps online, most likely online actually. It seems the last place I used the card did a "test" of the account by charging about $15 bucks to it, then refunding it back to the account about a week before they really hit me up. So I think they got the info off of their screen, or a receipt... sat on the info thinking I wouldn't notice it on a statement... then did a charge and credit... again thinking I wouldn't catch it... then hit me for the big one. They didn't count on me not using the card between August 7th and today. It was easy to see it on the activity report. Heads will roll. Crap! It's just so annoying to have to do the whole affidavit thing... wait on funds to come back... get a new card, etc. My dad just called last week about one of his regular cards getting tapped by some shady punk as well. I'm soooooo tired of these people. I think I caught it this time pretty quick, within 4 days of the incident... and back in '97 the built-in safeguards were definitely not there like they are now. The '97 incident(s) basically just had to sit on our credit for 7 years because we hadn't enrolled in the credit protection thingy. Now it is automatic. Still. This is frustrating. So... check your statements people!
Someone stole my wallet with my SS , License, and credit cards a few years ago. I check my credit history every 4 months or so. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp Legally we are allowed one per year for free is what i have been told.
yep.. same thing happened to me where a bar i once ran a $10 tab waited 6 months to run up $150 in three transactions... I played a gig there and some doofus takes my info 6 months later like I wouldnt notice... the bar owner offered me cash to keep quiet... i tried calling police after that but no police investigation happened after the bank gave me my money back... good on you to stay on top of this, IROC.. it sucks it has to be this way, but the burden is on the cardholder to keep track of this kind of stuff and the process is painstaking once it happens.. all levels of shady
this happened to me just a few days ago on a card a infrequently use. wells fargo called me up and i had to cancel that credit card. it was a $430 automatic payment for t-mobile which i don't have. after that happened i immediately signed up for the lifelock website too. crazy stuff.
Just to clarify, it's one credit report per year from each of the three companies. They don't give you a score, but some CCs include it as one of their perks.
dude, NEVER, EEEEEEEVVVVER, carry your SS in your wallet. all you need is DL, some CCs, and cash, and of course 25 reciepts . on a serrious note, really, don't carry your SS with you.
Hope you will take care of this ASAP! Carrying the SS with you IS A NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Memorize it. macalu beat me to it.
Strange... I've always carried my ss card with me... I think it's melded into my wallet. But I've since found out that this is a common problem up here. The kids sit at the video store, bored and hungry... then decide to throw a pizza party and order it up online... to the store of all places! Police report on the way!
Really? I lost my SS card over 20 years ago. I've never reordered it, and haven't had a need for it since.
I hope you at least put a red flag on that lost SS card. If there was a such thing back in the ancient days.
You should scan your PC for viruses and tojans. My brother's PC had a virus that steals all your information you input online and that is how he got his credit card number stolen.
BTW- I've done this for years... and I have all automatic fill-ins turned off... and I use Firefox which is safer... Plus, it's been pinpointed to some teenaged idiot at the video store... all this for renting a bunch of kid's Disney flicks!
