Of course my cell is four years old... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52950-2004Feb18.html Japan, a Wireless Vision of Future for U.S. Mobile Internet Is Mainstream as Cell Phones Take Place of Computers By Anthony Faiola Washington Post Foreign Service Thursday, February 19, 2004; Page A01 TOKYO -- In search of a chic cafe hidden in the neon alleys of a teeming Tokyo business district, Hiroki Wai activated the global positioning system on his cell phone and punched in the cafe's phone number. Instantly, a detailed map appeared and a perky female computer voice was navigating Wai toward a hot date with a $9 latte. "Now turn left; now turn right, walk straight ahead. . . . Hurray, you're here!" the voice chirped from his receiver. A satellite in Earth orbit charted his progress on a full-color street grid displayed on the screen of his cell phone. "The cell phone is way past being just a phone in Japan," said Wai, 32, a systems engineer who wakes up with his phone alarm at 6:30 a.m. and then uses the phone almost every waking hour to send and receive dozens of e-mails, link remotely to his home-office PC, download music and read newspapers, even novels, during his daily commutes. "For us," he said, "the cell phone is now a way of life." The cell phone market in the United States is set for a major shake-up after the announcement this week of a $41 billion buyout of AT&T Wireless by Atlanta-based Cingular Wireless, with the merged juggernaut poised to quicken the rollout of such advanced services as access to the mobile Internet and other third-generation, or 3G, technologies. Behind the rush to boost cell phone uses in the United States lies a less flattering truth: In recent years, America has lumbered forward like a John Deere tractor on the mobile information superhighway, while Japan has zoomed ahead like a Z-car. . . .
anyone here ever heard of the motorala v600. been waiting for it to come out. at least for here it will be the most advanced phone ever.
yeah, heard of the 600, but its even still lagging years behind. The only thing it has is mp3 capapility
why would you want to be controlled by your cell phone like that? yeah, it's neat and cool, but I certainly don't want to see an America where instead of actually conversing with people, you know, asking for directions, etc., people jsut go about their days never noticing anything that's going on around them, only staring at their cell phones.
That's tight, but there's one thing that I think of after I get over the original excitement....they're f***ing phones people! All I need in a phone is the ability to send and receive calls with a clear signal...test messages are nice though.
I just want to get rid of some of the gadgets in my life, and have a way to get on the internet sometimes while traveling.
It's nothing but a navigation unit with voice. It's a convenience, not like some Borg force taking over your life. Many new cars have the same functionality. I think everyone's level of convenience is different. People may consider the fact you're "talking" to people on a BBS instead of conversing with them on the phone a bit unnecessary. I think it's a great idea. The US lags waaaaay behind most of the rest of the world in terms of cell phone and GPS technology. As for whoever asked about the V600, I had heard that it was to have been released on the 16th of this month, but I haven't seen it. I was trying to get it for handsfree talking if necessary in the car (it's got Bluetooth). I hate pulling over to make a freakin' phone call, but I do so I don't kill anybody trying to drive while talking and holding a cellphone up to my ear.
US it seems, is behind everyone in terms of cell phones. Taxi drivers in Dubai and Bombay were rolling with the Nokia 7250's. That phone has not even been officially released over here. I have the Nokia 3650 and I just got the Jabra wireless bluetooth headset for it. Woo hoo! Of course my 3650 stopped working for like the third time now! T-mobile keeps on sending me replacements.
Even third world countries have better cell phones than we do here in america. I mean I been to bangladesh, and India last year, and they had phones comparable to the best Verizon phone out there(lg 6000) I mean our best phone, supposedly, the v600 is just a tad better than the previous model,... its pathetic that we have freaking luxuries over here that would make most other countries blush in shame, but when it comes to cell phones, we are the weakest link ( ok i exxajurate, but you get the point)
Man forget taxi drivers, I saw a freaking beggar... I mean straight up a begger have a color screen phone...
No, what its real sad, when people come up to me and tell me they need a new phone. Then they pull out this thing that looks like a cordless phone, I swear my cordless phone is probably smaller than most of the cell phones us Americans use, and then they proceed to try and replace it with a phone from the cordless fone section... I hate people, especially stupid cocky ones that think they know more than a person certified to sell the stuff they are arguing about....
That's what you think until you see everyone around you using the technology. Remeber the old days where internet was only used for email and minor surfing? Try to stop a college student these days from playing online games, chatting, downloadign music, checking sports highlights, gambling, and buying and selling stuff these days, you're gonna have one disgruntled kid. Trust me, I never thought I needed a new cell phone until I went to Shanghai and everyone, including cousins who have about 1/10th of my allowance and savings and whose parents make much less than mine do, walking around with 300 cells. Now I can't wait till my plan ends this summer so i can upgrade to a colored phone.
Well don't leave it at that... explain. I doubt I'd buy anything other than a Motorola or Nokia phone.
I used to be a diligent employee of Motorola... until they decided my entire division (and the innovative products we developed) were no longer necessary. I will never purchase another Motorola product or support any of their events again. That's precisely the reason I didn't run in the Motorola Marathon the past 2 years. I thought I had adequately persuaded all of my friends and family to boycott Motorola. Apparently my mommy and daddy don't love me, since I found 2 brand stinkin' new Motorola cell phones in their house last month. Oh the horror! What a cruel cruel world I live in!
Are you going to boycott every company that has ever laid off people? And did they do it to be mean and cruel, or do you think there was a business reason behind it? Should companies let unprofitable divisions sink the whole ship and make every employee lose their jobs? I guess that's enough questions for now.
