To the Trump supporters you are rightfully celebrating and I don't hate you or fear you. I recognize that you are Americans and a majority of Americans have spoken. Many of us though today might feel that the country no longer stands for the values that we believe in and that feel deeply afraid of the direction the country is going. I understand and share those feelings but now is not the time to fall into despair, but it is more important than ever to stand up for those principles that we believe in. I will not give up on this country. I still believe that everyone, even our most powerful political leaders are subject to the rule of law and should be held to account for their actions. That governmental power should not be concentrated in the hands of the chief executive. That we should not live in fear of each other or demonize those who are different than us be it in terms of what country they came from or what genders they identify with. That we should expect honor and decency from our political leaders than childish insults and petty corruption. Democracy is not just about elections, but it is about how we live and participate in this society. It is up to all of us, especially for those who believe that our politics and politicians have let us down to continue to work to improve this country as we believe it should be. That means getting involved in your community, advocating and organizing for causes you believe in, and the not being afraid to speak out for things you don’t.
Hopefully the American institutions will withstand another assault on them. They held last time. Hopefully they can hold this time. But whether they do or don't doesn't make it okay to assault them.
Most of your fellow citizens already have. We're on the fast track to authoritarianism and control by the wealthy and stupid.
Well that’s a nice post Sishir but I have given up on this country. I really think it all boiled down to the fact that we have a LOT of racist and sexist people who would rather have a convicted felon be president instead of a woman. This country has been around for 248 years and we still cannot bring ourselves to elect a woman… The next 4 years will be a sh!tshow and when things start going bad in every way you can imagine, it will be all of you racist, sexist cretins’ fault. You wanted him over a woman - enjoy the show.
Naive mindset. There is no justice and trump will never be held accountable. He's gonna stack the court 7-2 and will b dam untouchable. The aftermath of that stacked court will have lasting consequences Our country will probably b fine even if the courts ends up all conservatives and after Trump presidency but the lower class and minority won't b so happy. This is gonna b trickledown economics encore
https://www.iwm.at/transit-online/the-hungarian-shock-transition-from-democracy This, written in 2011, is what you have to look forward to. The last paragraph is as laughable as this thread will be in 2 years. Let’s see if we still recognize this country/this world in 2027….
Last night I was fielding calls and texts from friends who are also in despair especially female and LGBTQ friends. Many are talking about leaving the country. One even said as soon as the British Consulate in NYC opens he's going there. I'm not going to pretend things are going to be fine are easy. Nothing about yesterday changes my opinion that Trump is a conman who is a threat to the Constitution. I can wallow in despair and self-pity over that or I can continue no matter what our leaders in DC do. Four years ago during the last Trump presidency I saw my city in crisis. Much of my neighborhood was being burned or looted. I could've gotten up and fled like many including my own family were telling me too. Instead I stayed. I provided medical care to people injured. I tried to discourage people from looting and burning, helped to cleanup, and did food drives. It was important for me not to give up even though things were very dark and difficult.
Is this the official mourning thread this morning? Lol All kidding aside. You’re going to be alright. I know you’re a good dude but your mental makeup and your political beliefs are all wrong. My advice to you is maybe it’s time for you to take inventory of your thoughts and working on your self awareness. And maybe you will come to a conclusion that perhaps you were wrong in your leftist ideology and there are better common sense beliefs out there . I don’t want you to become an old liberal hack like some of the old braindead lefties in here that will never learn even with their advancing age.
The cabinet almost used the 25th amendment last time. The people surrounding Trump will be sycophantic to the extreme so the 25th is likely out of question this time. I told Basso a few weeks ago and stated it a few months before that. Trump will bring the Republican Party down to depths this next 4 years. He will embarrass this country as he gets older. inject light and bleach? Good people on both sides? You just wait. It’s going to be funny funny.
This is going to be terrible, but believe truth & not lies. Personally - the myth of holding Trump to account has been shattered. The people did it in 2020. The courts and political & business institutions did not. They failed American democracy As such pretty much the only reprieve I have from him is to literally ignore him and not give him the personal oxygen he craves - same for his narcissistic hangers on great & small. They might be main characters in their own lives, but for now not in mine. As far as how to go forward the first principle I have is to stick to truth, which is the autocrats big enemy As for the rest, we'll try to make do for my kids sake
To those who fear our constitution is under attack (we survived a civil war, ffs); In four years, what will it take for you to be convinced there is not a 'threat'? Does Trump need to double down on Biden's policy (which is a huge reason why Harris lost), shutter X, expand DEI hires, expand trans rights (whatever that means), invade Russia ect .. ect... Or will you accept a peaceful departure in 4 years? There is a good chance Trump will replace Sotomayor and Thomas.
Maybe. The US wasn't in great shape with either party. I'm convinced a split government was the absolute best option (which of course does have its own consequences). Are we really going to end taxes on Overtime and Tips giving certain workers huge advantages over other workers? Personally my employees are going down to minimum wage with mandatory 40 hour overtime at double pay that they can work from home if it does as well as automatic gratuities. Are we going to remove taxes on SS Benefits (something I'm not entirely against) without replacing that revenue that goes directly back to the SS Fund? Are we going to slap Chinese products with a 60% tariff, but magically give companies like Apple exemptions while small business pays? Are we going to slap 20% tariffs on Countries that do have fair labor like Canada and the EU? Or even Mexico when the very same person negotiated the trade deal we have with Mexico and Canada? How many people are we actually going to deport? And perhaps more importantly, how many are we going to legally import to offset those we deport? Obamacare hasn't been a major focus this go around, but will it continue helping the millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions and those stuck in the gap between Medicaid and affordable coverage? Are women going to continue to suffer because of challenges to get abortions even where their health depends on it? And what kind of message does it send that we continue to put a complete POS to the highest office in the land? I think we survive any current threat to our Democracy. It is to hard to amend the constitution, and we can't even accomplish it for relatively popular things like the ERA. Ukraine won't be fine. Eastern Europe in general might not be fine. It is also likely a very bad time to be in the Middle East, but lets face it, that has been true for a long time.
For me and most of us yeah. I don't think Trump will turn into the autocrat he flirts with, but, if I live in a red state and am either 1) considering getting pregnant 2) queer or 3) dependent on a functioning immigration/naturalization system, things may very much not be fine for me. And that's really a shame. My best hope for Trump is that he establishes the national BTC reserve and really brings forward an age of fiscal enlightenment. It's a longshot, but it's possible. I just hope there's minimal blood and tears along the way.
From the Trump supporters to you, you such a cuck. I don't care who you are. I just care that you cry yourself to sleep at night. I am done being reasonable. The Red Team is out for blood. They don't compromise. They want power. They want control. They do not want American Democracy.
