I thought the reasons we hired him were: 1. Our Owner likes big names 2. Our GM wanted a guy he could boss around about playing time for "assets" 3. Our GM wanted a guy to lose for a few years so he could get better draft picks and then move in Chris Finch I know this will be determined to be a "kneejerk" thread but frankly Kevin McHale already has me eating crow. I don't care how many games he wins. He doesn't have KMart playing defense but he is showing he is a LEGIT head coach. On a side note I was wanting us to retain our previous assistant coach but these new guys are also very good. JVG will remain my recent favorite, but McHale has already pwned me. In Morey I trust.
it's way too early to admit that you were wrong. Actually you were correct however you are wrong now.
Rockets certainly interviewed PLENTY for the head coaching vacancy. They better have come away with some decent coaches.
This plus Martin is a much better team defender than most on here believe. He is a smart ball player and stays in front of his man. His weakness is he doesn't have artest physical attributes. But he can't fix that. He is a much smater defender than Artest!
There was one point in the game tonight where someone was posting Kmart up (in transition I think?) and Kmart played the entry pass really aggressively. He got called for a foul, but his aggression on defense really stood out to me.
kmart was actually a pretty good defender in his early years, he just went thru a pretty long stretch, esp at sacramento where he was required to carry all the scoring, and he has never had the stamina for 30 mins+ of both way basketball. As for Mchale, that's 2 games now where we haven't let a playoff calibre opponent back into the game from a double digit lead, that may well be more than we managed to achieve in all of last season....
1. Without high Draft pick, Rox can only upgrade its roster gradually. Adelman is now 65, but we want a coach that will grow with the team. 2. Rox are looking for a improvement in the coaching system. Instead of having the assistance coaches to hold the white board, Alexander and Morey are trying to utilize the positions and upgrade the team with a muti-core processor. 3. Compared with the former and latter Min's head coaches, McHale indeed improved the winning rate by 11-20%.
I am impressed with Mchale so far. I could be wrong if their records dwindle, but I think if they get overwhelmed by better teams that it wouldn't be Mchale's fault lol. But I think so far Mchale has done a good job with the lineup that he has..and they have won against spurs and atl in efficient fashion so far. I like Dalembert's addition and I'm sure Scola and Martin and Lowry seemed to gel well together and they are great players who I think can beat the above average teams..just not the elite teams because they might be undersized against bigger teams with allstars as well as big players like memphis and chicago
I'm not ready to say if McHale is either good or bad at this point. I wonder how people will view McHale if we go on a five or six game losing streak?
i thought the reason we hired him was because he can tell Lex what he had for dinner wit a smile on his face. then lex would ask what about dessert? and Kevin would tell him as well, unlike rick and jeff, those guys would just give lex a smarmy smile. In the big picture, if mchale turn our big men to big contributors, all is good.
I'm a Kevin McHale hater from way back. Hated him in 86 as much as I hated Bird, Ainge, DJ and Walton. I never hated Parish, don't know why. When I heard the Rockets were interviewing him for the coaching job I laughed and thought it was only a courtesy interview and gave the guy 0 chance of landing the job. Then I heard that Morey was blown away by Kevin in the interviews. I thought DM was just being polite to an ex celtic and HOF player. Then he actually got the job and my jaw dropped! How could this happen? Then I heard him in the post draft interviews with the new players and he blew me away! I've watched and listened to all of the interveiws and videos of Kevin and it is clear why he blew away DM in the interview process. Now I cant wait for the next Kevin McHale sound bite or interveiew. The guy gets me excited just listening to him. Four games into the season and i love the dude. DM was also smart enough to surround him with an all-star coaching staff which makes it even better. I'm guessing Kevin is a lot more cooperative with allowing DM to help build the coaching staff and a lot more willing to help lead the team in the direction that DM and Les want the team to go in than RA was. Most importantly I'm guessing that with Kevin, DM thinks he has a coach that is not only good in front of a microphone but also someone that is willing to pick up the phone and discuss the team or the game whenever he calls. From the sound of things, the relationship between RA and the front office was less than cordial.
