A week ago I came home from work to find my apartment a bit emptier than I'd left it -- 'specifically one TV and stereo system emptier . At first I though my roommate had moved them into his room but 3 minutes later he came strollin' in. I ask him, "So where's my TV, dude?" He just throws back the most confused, cornfed-boy-from-the-midwest-stuck-in-downtown-Houston look. Then he says, "We been robbed, mayan!" That's right. Some dope fiend broke in my place and made off with not only my TV... Not only my stereo... Not only my microwave... ...but my friggin' Guitars. My Sexy-Mexy Start with her Tex-Specials Pickups and my roomies g/f Ibanex, which I was borrowing. Argh!!?! Thank God for insurance Honestly, I can live without the stuff ('cept my guitars), but the idea someone else was in my apartment and could conceivable return, armed, while I'm there, disturbs me deeply. I just moved into this apartment two months ago, from the UH dorms, so this my first real experience living on my own. I haven't been able to sleep right since. Anyone else here been robbed? What'd they take? How'd you deal with it? ------------------ Hey now, Hey now, don't Dream it's over...
I've been robbed, 3 times. The first time it was my wedding ring and some video games. I usually take it off when i play ball, and i placed it on a bookcase. Strange all they took was the ring and a couple of games. I think it was someone that works at the apartment because the freaking door was locked. So we moved. 2nd time: dont really remember what was stolen. I know a vcr at least, but we had a lease, so we couldnt move. Did some stuff to make it more safe(i thought) and didnt concern myself with it. 3rd time: vcr, stereo, all my cds, some jerseys, my wifes jewelry... we got very paranoid after this one. We never wanted to leave the house. The lease expired and we moved. This place is very good and we feel very secure here. My advice to you stone cold: do whatever you can to make yourself feel more secure. THIEFS SUCK!! ------------------ Rockets 2001: lo creo, lo creo!!
My wife's car has been broken into, stereo and change stolen. I've had my bicycle stolen, twice! Yes, thank goodness for insurance. Put a message out in houston.music (USENET newsgroups) about your stolen guitars. (got serial numbers?) There's also a website where you can get the word out about the guitars.. I'll see if I can find it. hang in there... and like someone else mentioned, do whatever you think that'll make you safe. rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Stone Cold Hakeem Sorry to hear about your losses. Thankfully nobody got injured. I would like to dish out some injuries though... Thursday night my car was broken into. Screwdriver through the lock, cd player & remote gone, 25 cds, maglite, and they screwed up my back seat trying to get into the trunk. It could always be worse I guess. $hit happens. ------------------ "UNBEATABLE"
http://www.axreg.com/ this is the site for stolen guitars... but I tried to visit the site and it was down? maybe it will come back up or maybe it's been 'stolen' rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Man, that SUCKS!!! About 11 or 12 years ago when I was still living at home, my folks place got broken into. It was a REALLY REALLY cold winter day (like 25 all day - wierd for Houston). I was renting a rehersal room with a band but the guy who owned the place wouldn't let us leave the heat on at night because of the bill. I'm sure you can see where this is heading... Sure enough, I brought home all 4 of my basses and my guitar player's strat "for safe (and warm) keeping." Well, ALL of them got ripped. Never found 'em either. Fortunately, insurance paid for them, but what a drag!!! ------------------ Who's your buddy? Who's your pal? I am, aren't I?
when i lived on the ocean in Rhode island my roomate had 3 of his surfboards stoled from behind the house. he was insured(all these stories make me think i should get insurance) so it was all good, but one was a classic, and its when things cant be replaced that it hurts. a music instrument is a special thing, its an emotional tool(my moms a musician i know all about it) and a surfboard is much the same. its just sucky when someone stals something that is worth far more to you than to the sleazy fence that buys it. aalso though i hope you totally trust your roomate. and his ftriends. im pretty sure it was another of my roomates friends that took those asurfboards, but i know that he took all kinds of little things from me and the other 5 that lived in that house. tons of CDs, a VCR, and left without paying some hefty bills. you may think you know the dude, but ya gpotta look out for yourself a little ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
My parents home got broken into while I was away at college. The scary thing was how brazen the thieves were. It was the middle of the afternoon on a week day, and my Mom was at home. Well, the thieves knocked on the door, and my Mom ignored them, thinking they would go away. When noone answered, they kicked in the front door, and it became a home invasion. There were 2 chain locks, and a deadbolt on the door. One of the chain locks had a battery-operated alarm on it, which as it turned out was the saving grace for my mother. The alarm sounded, the thieves ran. She quickly found a hiding place, and called 911. 3 hours later, an officer finally showed up. Well, about 30 seconds later, the thieves returned, broke the alarm, and proceeded to rob the house. They took a VCR, TV and a stereo, which were all cheap because my dad is cheap. Luckily, they never suspected my mother was in the house. After something like this, how do you ever feel secure again? Well, my mom doesn't. She moved. She now has 3 dogs (my dad wouldn't let us have them before this incident). She has a monitored alarm system. She's had the doors modified. During the robbery, all the locks were still intact, but the door frame was the weak point. Rescue a couple of dogs from the pound. They're great companions, and deter thieves. As for cars, get an alarm and a pullout stereo. Keep the interior of your car bereft of anything interesting. I even fold down my rear seats to show that there's nothing in the trunk. The last two places I've lived have been hit with a rash of car burglaries, but I've never had a problem. Maybe its that Guns 'n' Ammo magazine I leave on the dashboard! ------------------
Man I have never feared being robbed in Houston but you guys are scaring me. One time in Dallas I was going to play a party and we set up and everything, then I go to hang out for a while before we play, I look to the performance area (not a stage)and some little thug picked up my ESP Explorer and started walking off, I chased him down and got it back without having to kick the crap out of him. Appearently no one knew the guy. Man that was a close one. ------------------ "banging Shaq is a whole different expirience"-Pete Babcock Behold the power of quotation

Listen and learn so this doesn't happen to you. I was robbed once over Chrismas while in college in Florida. Typical schools out robery. If you leave for break, put your nice stuff into storage, or just don't get nice stuff. Always buy renters insurance. It runs $12-$20 bucks a month. As heard here, insurance is worth it. The second ATTEMPT was 5 months later. I was chillin watching Law and Order, 3am in FL, when a pretty girl knocked on my door. I looked out, then headed out the back. At this time my front door was baricaded. As I came around the side of my duplex, there was a guy in a mask peering around the front. I scuffled with him, landing a good blow to the throat. As he was choking, I ran back inside. Luckily they chickened out after I fired a shotgun out the back door. I came to find out through the grapevine that the guy with the gun was hiding by my front door. Damn inside job by some former dorm buddies turned COKEHEADS. NEVER open the door if you don't know the person. I thought it might be some chick I knew for a booty call. Talk through the door. Make sure the person is someone you know or tell them to leave. Most knocks at 3 am are bad news anyway. Threatening to call the police is never a bad idea. Do that 91 thing, then hit the last 1 upon need. Alot of roberies in apartments are by neighbors. Try to get to know your neighbors, and never flash your nice stuff in the living room. People that knock on your door will see this stuff. Sometimes robbers will knock on your door saying they are selling stuff just to case your place. Keep your stereo and computer in your bedroom. Don't blast your stereo as you come and go in your car. A good car stereo usually means more is inside. Good comunity relations can deter alot. I go outside to smoke, and end up seeing alot of my neighbors as they come and go. Be pleasant and talk about the weather. Dogs are always a good idea. No one want to mess with a dog when thay can move onto another. Alarms work well too, but it might take them awhile to get there. If all esle fails, shave your head, wear army clothes, and pump weights in plain view of your neighbors. They will think you are an army guy or a cop, neither of which robbers want to mess with. Signs are good. A large NRA sticker or sign works. Something to the effect of: Robbers beware, I don't call the police. I'm a member of the NRA. Cop stickers work also. Be safe. Getting robbed sucks. ------------------ T-Pooh and BahDakota went up the hill, to make a bet on a Forward. When it all came down, they were nowhere to be found. Colby, did ya pull a Jackie chan move on the guy or did u pin him down and just hit him in the neck? Thats scary stuff mqn and sounds like u handled it well, If it was me i'd **** myself and it take me awhile to figure what the hell to do! ------------------ "The early bird may get the worm, but so does the bird that finished off the tequila bottle the night before"
It was textbook fight or flight. I started backing up at first, then something clicked. It was go time. If you can land one hit, go for the throat. It was Chan style, but I was just trying to survive. I didn't sleep for 3 dyas after. I feared they would return. I moved one week later. ------------------ T-Pooh and BahDakota went up the hill, to make a bet on a Forward. When it all came down, they were nowhere to be found. Man, that's some serious stuff. I've never had our place broken into, but my parents run two small businesses, and both of those have had robbery problems. Mostly it just pisses you off. Morons who have no respect for anything and try to take advantage of your hard work. I'm glad you got through it ok Colby, and got in a good shot in the process... ------------------ "Do you know what nemesis means?
