I am about 6-5, 175 or so. To be a legit 3-man, I know I need to build muscle mass and get bigger in general. Getting quicker would also help...

I know I need to get on a routine, not just random lifting.

Help me Clutchfans, it is my dream to make this happen... I have 6 months...

To gain 25lbs of functional muscle in 6 months, you would have to take some form or another of performance enhancing drugs. Even that's a stretch I think.

Undergo season-ending stress fracture injury, rendering you immobile. That'll get you 25 pounds quick.

Don't listen to this guy. That is the option he took/wanted to take.

focus on strength not weight, eat hard, lift harder and you can put on the weight.

the problem is you will need to cut down on basketball playing. Possibly just shoot jumpers and don't run for the rebounds. Any running will burn calories and keep you from gaining.

Eat a bunch of food, lift hard. Bam! Routine.

I could give him the same advice, but 2 problems:

    - He needs to add 25lbs - that's a very specific number. I assume someone has told him that they need to see this number. So focusing on just the strength is no good.

    - Eating a bunch of food = neglecting bodyfat. Not a good thing for a bball player.

    - Reduction in basketball activities? That's a great idea 6 months before entering college basketball!

Come on dude. Focus on the guy's needs. If he doesn't want to do the drugs, he has to be realistic. 25lbs of functional muscle in 6 months is not something you can do by just "eatin good food, slow down on cardio and lift like a mad man."

The guy doesn't want to reach the end of the 6 months and realize he had no chance so he should've focused on alternatives.

screw not playing bball. just do your best and gain as much as possible. hopefully your at least somewhat used to working. if you are then lift with mostly heavy weights.

you can drink protien and weight gain shakes if you are going to be lifting and playing bball. dont drink and party much get good rest. you may not and probably will not gain 25 pounds. but you will probably cut your body fat percentage and gain somewhere around 15 pounds thats pretty good.

If you eat a lot everyday, you're not only going to be getting muscle, but you'll be getting a lot of fat.

You're not going to get 25 pounds of lean body mass in 6 months. Unless you're willing to gain a bunch of fat as well, it just won't happen. It my say little, but 5-10 pounds is manageable if you're lucky.

Here's a great free website on bulking up while cutting/maintaing body fat. Shows routines, nutrition, bascially everything you need to know in terms of gaining muscle and working out. Take a look at it if you're really interested in bulking up.

Gaining 4-5 lbs of lean muscle per month, though technically possible, would probably require you to lift like a body builder, and even then there are going to be physical limits on how much muscle your body is going to be able to put on in that time span. I'm thinking you should probably set 10-15lbs of muscle as your target. It'll still take a ton of work and dedication, but it's possible.

Do you know where you're going to school in the fall? If so, I would try to find the contact information of one of the strength and conditioning coaches for the basketball team and figure out a workout plan with them.

I would be much more optimistic for a 18 year old with hormones and never lifted before. If he lifts hard and eats good food he will not just pile on fat. I didn't suggest to eat cakes pies and bigmacs.

Just because your dismal failure in dedication or possibly genetics and technique proved to show lackluster results does not mean that other more disciplined people who give a crap about their drug free body cannot achieve their goals. Suggesting drugs right off the bat. Classy.

He does not need a number, he said he wants 25 pounds. My actual fat/lifting reply went to the other guy. How are those injections coming? Mix in some heroine yet?

1 lb of muscle a week for 25 weeks is completely possible.

Some new lifters gain 1.5-2 lbs a week in the first 2-3 months of training.

This is a good point which is why I said to focus on strength not weight.

I think you might want to start looking at other options besides basketball.

Gaining 25 pounds is not impossible. Gaining 25 pounds where it actually helps your basketball is impossible. It requires eating a lot. Like maybe 2 times what in eat now in terms of calories. It also would require you to work out a lot.

I say work on your quickness and strength and let your body fill out more naturally. Don't put numbers or a deadline on it.

I read kilos... 25 lbs is around 10kgs. That's easily doable in 6 months.

25 lbs is doable. As it was said, you are going to have to lift like a bodybuilder and hit every single muscle. It won't hurt to look into sports supplements like Animal Pak. Buy from DPSNutrition.com, by far the cheapest place I've found, and they don't gouge on shipping.

You probably will have stretch marks, but they will fade with time.
