Ok, You always here the story about the kid who took his ball and went home. Well, today, I was playing hoops at the YMCA, and this guy kept cheating, he kept calling traveling, and phantom fouls, and was being a general A$$. After the 3rd time he called traveling during an obvious foul, he said...OK, I will shoot for it. Right then, I said, if you stick to this call, I am simply going to leave, this is a waste of time. He shot it, and I took my ball and left. I wish we were not playing with my ball, but that is what happened, I felt very sheepish doing it, but man, I don't want to waste my time playing with someone who is an obvious cheater. Life is too short. So, my question for the panel today....good decision, or bad? Be gentle. DD
I have found that the majority of people get along and do not cheat in pickup games. But there is sometimes that one ******* who ruins it for everyone. If you're not having fun, then I see no problem with leaving.
So you left during the middle of a game? Well, it depends on what you feel. If you felt like what you did was right then yea, cause thats you. Some people would respect that the fact that you would rather walk away from a person who is cheating and such.. but for me, I would have killed him on the court for cheating. Cheaters pisses me off. But everytime im at the Y.. I would call my "next" then lift weights, and someone would always say they had next and blah blah blah.. Oh wells If it came to the point where you would almost punch him in the face then yea, good decision
most people like that can't hoop anyways....a couple of good, hard fouls usually straightens them out... You're first mistake was hooping at the Y....that's usually where all the uncoordinated pansy ass white boys play ball. Take a trip to the ghetto for some real action. Better yet, meet me in Round Rock next time I visit my sister and I'll take you one-on-one.
Knock him to the ground on and say that "THAT" is a foul...Or just set a bone crushing legal pick on him... Regardless...your ball...your call
I used to get some of the best pick up games at UT's old Gregory gym before they tore it down. but I heard its awsome now. Man, old U.T. players would come in there like Travis Mays and Joey Wright. Fun times. Nothing puts you on cloud nine like hitting a shot over a guy who used to play in the NBA. Anyone here from U.T. in the early nineties. Remember Tremain Wingfield, he was a transfer from Louisville back in 93 I think. There was this tall white guy who used to play in Gregory, he was about 6'7, had long curly hair, and he wore sandles. He used to hang out at Gregory, and everyone used to call him Jesus, because of his hair and sandles. One day in Gregory, he was posting up Tremain Wingfield and turned around and dunked on him with both hands. The story spread around campus like wildfire. Wingfield was a pretty good athlete. Too funny. Anyone from U.T. ever heard about that.
I did not mind leaving, but the fact that I had to take my ball made me feel a bit sheepish. The guy is a really good player, he was just cheating like mad. The game was tied 12-12....and I just left. I just think that I would rather do other things with my time then play ball with A$$holes that are going to make me mad for the rest of the day. I was chuckling as I walked out. DD
I think you did the right thing. I mean, in most of the pickup games I am involved in "fouls/traveling" are rarely called unless they are blatant. Otherwise it gets annoying. Plus who wants to be known as the guy that can't get the job done without calling a foul? Speaking for myself, unless I get totally hammered I would never call a foul. Guess that is playground basketball. But, in the case you suggested, it is your ball and you want to have fun. If you feel the person is not playing fair and you are not having any fun then why sit around and not enjoy yourself just to finish the game? You have to lookout for yourself.
Was this the downtown YMCA, and was the player's name "Chris"? I've gotten into multiple spats with him. He usually ends up cursing, pouting and defeated when I'm done with the physical and verbal abuse.
first, you must make him understand that in streetball the rule is, no blood, no foul. Second, you tell him if he wants to slow the game down by calling ticky tack crap, that he can go play by himself. If all else fails, pull a Danny Ainge and throw the ball in his face. then say "That's my ball b*tch" But you must never leave the court during a game. If he keeps up his junk, increase your level of intensity and make sure you beat him. If he is calling the ticky tac fouls on you, increase the frequency of the contact until he gets mad and leaves.
Dakota, You should have told this guy that you could have gotten him a copy of your new video game, but he blew his chance now with his cheating. That would have made him think twice or you could have said that cheaters never win and winners never cheat!
One that I've heard was that TJ Ford has gone into Gregory and picked the 4 worst basketball players and try to take on 5 of the best players there. Well, his team lost and allegedly he threw a big hissy fit and said "this is my court, get off." I thin Roy Williams may have been on the team that beat him.
Get a ref, b****. Go cry on your momma's court. No stopping. Damn, I hate a-holes like that. Bottom line - he needed to go, not you. Call the b**** out. Make a stand.
Isn't Suge from Round Rock or was that Tupac? Traveling during a pick-up game ...you should have just beat him/her and sent em' to the sideline and ignored the calls for "next". Now next time you show up at the Y they will be talking some smack.
What, did no one else bring a ball?! If no one brought a ball, they don't deserve to play anyway. Also, I'm ashamed to ever call anything unless I get completely hammered. Where I play we generally call fouls we commit instead of the ones we suffer. I'm surprised there are adult players who are willing to call ticky-tack calls. Anyway, leaving in the middle probably wasn't great simply because it affords him an opportunity to blame you instead of himself. But, there probably isn't any great resolution to a problem with a guy who doesn't understand the etiquette of pick-up ball.
