I think this quote from Maurice Taylor sums up the problem with the rockets

"With the teams we're playing, it looks like make-or-break," Rockets forward Maurice Taylor said. "We got Utah a couple times, the Lakers next week (followed by the Suns). Those are the teams that are basically fighting for playoff position with us. You never know what will happen in the NBA, but you can call it make-or-break. The good thing is, when we need to step up, that's when we play our best."

I've heard numerous rockets make similiar statements over the course of the season and it makes my wince every time. They don't seem to realize that you need to step up EVERY SINGLE GAME! you need to play your best EVERY SINGLE GAME! Michael Jordan realized that and that's why his teams would win 70+ games at times. Hopefully they'll mature and learn this but somebody really needs to beat it into their heads that there is never a game in which they aren't needed to step up. They play against professional basketball players in every game and they should play them accordingly.

Of all the posts with criticisms I've read (and contributed to) lately, I appreciate this one more than many others. I totally agree that the Rockets are mentally ill-prepared for many of their games.

Unfortunately, this fact again points to what an incredibly horrible job Rudy is and has been doing all year long!!!

I see someone other than myself spent some of the weekend watching the Jordan-fest.

    ;)

Seriously, jm-will is right, but it is also a problem with the NBA as a whole. There really isn't one single team(save possibly the Mavs and Lakers of late) that bring it every night. Maybe it's gameplan. Maybe it's attitude. Either way, it is a problem. Guys say they are competitive, but they aren't competitive all the time, meaning in practice(yes, AI, we talkin' 'bout practice) and in games. Guys want to take care of injuries on "company time"(soon company time won't be enough Shaq....maybe not even this season). Overall the attitude of the new millenium NBA player sucks.

i'm glad to see people agree with me but in hindsight, i regret that i didn't state i really really love this team we've put together and i am looking forward to watching them develop together. i'm not of the opinion we need to be rid of mobley or griffin or any of the other players who seem to regularly be made scapegoats. i am of the opinion this team needs to prepare themselves better mentally and play their best every night...

Not that I disagree but did you realize the bulls of that season lost twice to the raptors. 2/12 of the Bulls losses was to the worst team in the NBA that season. Just an interesting fact I'd like to point out.

We do have a bad habit of playing down to the level of some of our easier opponents. But that doesn't explain why we got trounced twice by Dallas this year. I'm still bitter about that.

The sad part is that every other day there's a quote from a different player that sums up the problem with the Rockets. Amazingly, it's the whole team that's clueless and not just one player.
