I think I have shin splints, but I'm no doctor. I've been experiencing constant, but dull pain on the top of my tibia-bone area that sharpens whenever I jump or run. The pain is somewhat noticeable during athletic activity and gets even worse after said activity. Can anyone confirm that I have shin splints? Also, will it cause any irreparable damage if I continue to play basketball with this pain? I signed up for a league and don't really want to drop out if I don't have to. I'm just icing it and hoping for the best for now... UPDATE: I'm starting to think its Patellar Tendinitis now....
Was hoping there would be someone in the medical field here on Clutchfans that could just confirm what I think I'm experiencing. Lol. If the pain gets any worse I'll go to a doctor, but that's last resort right now.
Go up to walmart and grab some ace bandage cling wrap and plastic bags. Put ice in the bags and wrap them around your shins for as long as you can. This will help the swelling, repeat as needed. Shin splints hurt, but aren't a big deal.
Yeah the pain is manageable. I'm icing them right now. I just want to know if playing basketball is going to cause any sort of damage. I'm playing through the pain but I don't want this to have some sort of lingering effect down the road.
I play ball on concrete about three times a week and have basically gotten used to the pain, but tmoney is spot on for the pain. The frozen gel packs are pretty good too.
+1. This is exactly what a doctor will tell you. Gotta rest it. Seriously, elliptical and **** like that only.
My pain lasted for like 6 months until i just became used too it, now im usually sore for a day and then i am fine. Another thing i would try is changing up your shoes or add heel inserts, this will take pressure off. I have a wonderful sports medicine dr who is reasonable and knows what she is talking about. Her name is Camille Goff. Google her, i promise you she is an angel from god.
Sounds good man. I got some athletic soles and I think I'll switch to my Kobes. Thanks for the advice!
I used to get shin splints when I was in high school running track. Coaches used to rap my shins real tight and make me jog backwards on the track. It seemed to help but that was back in the 80's. Something about jogging backwords strengthed the muscle high on your tibia I was told.
Shin Splits occur at the top of your tibia? They cause swelling? Maybe that's not what I have. I have no idea what's wrong with me, the bottom of my shins hurt when I run so I can't run very far like I used to. And I don't have swelling. Any ideas?
I had a stress fracture in my shin that I tried to play through with for several weeks until it got to the point where I could barely walk. The doctor said to give it rest for 3 weeks which I did while using crutches to lay off of it and get out of class 5 minutes early (I was in high school then). Rest is all you can do.
Hmmm. That sounds kind of bad lol. I'm going to try to play through it though. Might as well take the risk! Lol.
At one point I got what I think were shin splints playing ultimate. I was at a two day tournament and my shins started killing me. I was sure I would have to stop playing. I took ibuprofen and they immediately got better. I was able to keep playing that weekend and took ibuprofen propholactictly for the next several weeks each time I played and it cleared right up.
