Terrible interface and impossible to follow a discussion. Character limit pretty much prevents anything but surface level discussions or thought. What's the draw?
Once someone replies to a "thread".....I have no idea wtf is going on and who said what. I am only on it to see what the stock pumpers are up to.
I always get a text message from Elon with a catchy word and no context. I try to click the 20 messages under it and can't open them.
I understand the instant part. With the trash that's on it, I difficult to get to the news especially anything in-depth. More like instant text bites.
This is the problem. ANY TOPIC. This endless supply of content driven by "algorithms" is an epidemic.
I found Twitter to be useful for following people and topics but not so much for interaction. Then Elon Musk bought and trashed it. A complete shame. If a viable alternative would emerge (particularly one that isn't connected to Mark Zuckerberg), X would disappear. The only brand value X has now is it's past legacy as Twitter. I still use it for the same purpose but I'll probably delete my account eventually.
It's (was) a great way to connect with people from around the world who share your interest and expertise. I've made real world connections and picked up several gigs just from folks reaching out via Twitter. You do (did) need to spend some time cultivating your feed and sticking with just the folks you follow--going into the For You trash heap is a losing proposition as is using it for news or current events. The reason I'm still on is because many of the people in my field are still there, though more seem to be leaving each day. It sucks because it took me 10 years to build my group and since Musk took over, it's being diminished daily. Still, there's no other alternative as of now, though many of my folks who have left Twitter went to BlueSky--but the number of folks I interact with there is still smaller than zombie Twitter.
What character limit? I am not aware of X being used for discussions. Mastering the algorithms is a pain. Power users use multiple feeds and are disciplined enough not to taint each algorithm feed. If you only want Rockets content, create a feed and follow Rockets posts and do not engage in anything else. Mute frequently and often. Example - Mark Cuban b****es all he sees is right wing content. Mark Cuban also engages frequently with right winged content. Mark Cuban claims he understands how algorithms work. Mark Cuban also thinks he's smart.
