I was surfing the web for news on the A&M/Franchione situation and I looked at the websites for Houston local news. I looked at many channels. That got me to thinking...I can remember as a kid that there were 6 TV stations in Houston. 1) Channel 2 (NBC) 2) Channel 8 (PBS) 3) Channel 11 (CBS) 4) Channel 13 (ABC) 5) Channel 26 (Independent) 6) Channel 39 (Independent) That's right...Channel 20 didn't extist yet and 26 and 39 had no network. I will always remember watching daytime reruns of "Chico & the Man" on KHTV "39 gold." Hell...now 39 changed their call sign to KHWB. Anybody else feel old because of this?
I'm sure Dunk and Behad will be here soon, well at least during one of their many trips to the Loo to empty the bladder during the night, asssuming they can find their walker.
Damn you are old! Probably the earliest thing I can thing of is when I was young and went to Astroworld to watch the Monkees in concert (I think it was some sort of reunion). But compared to what you mention, i feel like a child.
I remember when those were the only channels. I remember we used to get channel 5 in my house. It was a rock and roll channel. I dont know if anybody got that channel though.
Actually, my sister has a cup that advertised for that station. It was a small red plastic cup that displayed the channel "5" station and its station letters (is that the proper way of saying it?). I am trying to find it now, but no luck. If I do end up finding it, Ill take a pic of it and post it here.
A couple of years ago I was remarking to my sister that the 80s music she listened to should be called the Oldies just like how 70's rock is refered on the radio. After a couple of punches, I could tell that she wasn't too pleased.
I feel old due to other things. Like walking into a topless bar knowing that a majority of the women there could be my daughter if I had one around age 21.
I know we've discussed this before...but I still remember staying up late as a kid to watch Houston Wrestling on channel 39. Paul Boesch ruled! "Need a new roof...yam yam Mr. Norman" (I know it's not yam yam...I was a kid and it sounded like that...so it sorta stuck).
Ahh the von ericks, hacksaw jim dugan and Jake the snake (with his famous DDT) all got their start here in houston (I'm sure there were other too but these were my favorites). I remember going down town to the coliseum to watch wrestling.
Who remembers 39's TV Kid News... (that's where I first heard that Elvis had died, I went outside and told the phone man that was working on the pole near my house...) How about TV Kid POW!!! a video game that was played by a random caller who said, "POW" and someone at the station would fire the button and shoot the alien ship... prizes could be won!! anyone remember what the Ch. 13 late night movie was called? I totally remember the 3 o'clock Million Dollar Movie!!!
Most of us remember having TV without a remote. But do you guys remember the first remotes that came with cable? The ones that had the long cord going to the box?
