I decided to move into a house and I want to install a basketball goal. I either want to get a portable system or do a roof mounted system. Any recommendations on where I should go, or what brands are the best? I think tempered glass would be cool, but I think it may be out of my price range. I looked at hoopinc.com and it is out of my price range. I am looking to spend between $200 and $400. Can anyone who has a roof mounted system tell me how hard it is to install?

    Thanks for any help!

What are you planning on doing with it? Will you just shoot around, or play actual pick up games? This is my personal experience, but almost every one of those portable goals I've ever played on has been in marginal shape at best. The rim seems to go lopsided alot. Of course, this is usually due to kids lowering the goal and dunking on it, which those things weren't designed for. Roof mounted goals are OK if you just want to shoot around, but if you want to play actual games, they are not that fun to play on, unless you like slamming into walls while going in for layups. Plus, too many airballs with dent up your garage door pretty bad...

The driveway isn't that large so maybe 2 on 2 at the most. Most of the time I'm going to shoot around or play against my housemate (unless she schools me). Maybe I could just put the garage door up when I play.

I don't know much about the roof installation, but I do know that the probability of a broken window is high. I think as a kid I shattered two myself. You will also be cleaning that side of your house due to the mud and spalding finger prints. You should also note that you might lose part of your lawn if you have kids. They will trample the out of bounds area unless you create one.

I have no kids, so that's not a concern. I don't think there are any windows nearby. And as far as the lawn goes, I'd be happy if it was all cement. I don't really care if some grass dies due to basketball. What I do care about is the backboard falling off and destroying the roof.

B, I would choose a roof mounted system, but make sure your HOA allows it.

When I was a teenager, my brother installed one on top of our garage and we worn the heck out of it. It was a low price, cheap small size backboard. It was ugly (the reinforcements), but it was sturdy, and IMHO, is the most important thing. I think those portable ones just wobble too much.

    MoonBus,

Thanks for the advice. I agree about the wobbleness of the portable backboards. I guess my biggest hangup on the roof mounted system is installing it myself. I want it to be done right so I know I can't do it. Any ideas on how much it would cost to be installed and at a reasonable rate?

Seems to be your very basic concrete stand alone system wouldnt be much more than a roof mounted system. Only extra thing you need is the pole and some cement. Can't be too hard.

Check out Oshman's. They have some pretty cheap in ground basketball systems.

or, if you had extra cash laying around, these are real good systems.

A pole mounted system would be good, but I don't hav e the space for it. A pole would block the garage or severly limit the playing field if it is put to the side of the driveway.

I checked out hoopinc and was shocked by the prices. I don't want to spend more than $400 for a hoop system when I might only live at this place for 6 months.

    Thanks for the advice!

I ordered my system from lyaindustries.com. They just make the brackets, but you can order the backboard and rim from them too. I have an adjustable wall mount on the side of my garage, but they also have a roof mount. I mounted it myself, but it is really a two person job. It is not hard, as long as you are reasonably proficient with basic carpentry skills. I have been very pleased with my system.

Hehe yeah One of the kids on the team I coach had this happen to him. His mother put some junk in their driveway and made a sign that said "Free Take what you want". She set the sign leaning aginst his portable goal. They went out of town for the weekend and while they were gone someone came over and took his goal :D:D.

A "Hoops" system is probably way too expensive.

I don't know what is the best, but make sure that when you install it, you put it at the right height. When we installed one in our house (9th grade), my father dug the hole too deep and it's now a foot lower than real goals. I could've been a great basketball player, but my equipment was flawed . . .

But hey, no one can beat me on that driveway :)

Okay, I'll check out the site when I get home today. The only problem is my carpentry skills are non existant unless you count smashing my own fingers and nails getting hammered in at very odd angles. Maybe my future roommate is more handy with a hammer than I am. That way I can just hold the backboard still while she hammers away.

I looked at some systems over the weekend and my main concern now is installing it once I buy it. Who could I contact to install a basketball goal?
