I have IE 6 on my comp, and I want my homepage to be www.snap.com, I continually go to Tools--Internet Options-- General-Homepage, I set www.snap.com as my homepage, and it stays on this until i restart my computer but then it goes back to some random dead link, why wont it stay, what can I do to fix this?
Try doing it, then exiting IE completely. See if that will hold it. It's one of the strange nuances of Windows, but sometimes changes won't take effect until the program is completely closed. If you restart the computer, and let the restart shut down IE, it may not save the changes.
I've seen some sites that run scripts that install a program which is set in the registry to run at startup. When the program runs, it overrides any homepage changes you might have made. Pretty sneaky stuff... What OS are you running? In XP (and I believe 9x/ME) you can run the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) to see what programs are set in the registry to load on startup--you won't necessarily see these in your "Startup" folder. I have no idea what the names of these programs are, but with a little experimentation, you should be able to figure out which one might be doing it by running each one manually. You also might do a search on Google to see if anyone else has already done some of the hard work for you... Good Luck, x34
BTW, they usually redirect to a website, though, not just a blank page. What is it changing the homepage to? x34
I am willing to bet a hundred bucks that you have a virus. I've had this before. DL a virus scanner and get rid of it.
I've had this problem before, where I would set my startup page to one thing, reboot the machine then it would go to an page that had tons of pop-up ads. think some adult websites do this, so i hear. I had to edit my registry to resolve the problem. remember before doing anything, backup, backup, backup. http://www.winguides.com/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=genwin&Number=41738&page=0 this link should provide a start in the right direction. sorry i dont remember the exact keys/strings to edit as it happened a few years back, and i be too tired.
Ok im bumping this up, i have tried to edit my registry but i cannot get this thing fixed, can anyone help?
Those warez sites will get you. Try opening your Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and looking for processes that don't look familiar. One program redirected to a companies website anytime my browser couldn't find the url. Didn't see anything new in the Control Panel to remove...In their hidden faq, they provide an executable that allows the user to remove the script. I forgot which website did it. Good luck!
