Hey guys I am trying to find a good quality cookware starter set for my girlfriend. She just recently moved out and is in need of something simple like a 5-8 piece set. What I am looking for are name brands that you guys trust. There is no need for professional brands but these pots and pans will be used a few times a week so quality is important.

So what brands do you all trust for pots, pans and knives as well?

What is the difference between stainless steel cookware and nonstick with teflon? Which do you all reccomend and why?

Basically everyday cooking. Eggs, rice, pasta, veggies, meats. Its for everday use. I would guess a small skillet, larger skillet, sauce pan, larger pot. Im not really well informed when it comes to cooking.

Cannot go wrong with Bialetti (pricey but worth it) with their commercial or Maestro line. Also check out Bosch (also slightly expensive but spending good meony ensures quality) and their 8 pc set. T-Fal is also a great bet but avoid buying from Walmart since these are the inferior versions made in China and an insult to the brand name. Finally, Cuisinart is a good value brand and the one you'll find easily in the US.

I started out with a full set of castiron cookware. My ex- got them and I wish I had them. Nothing fancy; just castiron cookware. Talk about durable! She's going on their 33rd year.

This is an important question. There are alot of cooking sets of different sizes. Probably the best thing to do is to go looking. Kohl's has some nice sets, but the prices range greatly.

The best deal in pans is the Tramontina tri-ply stuff from wal-mart. They're built like all-clad at a quarter the price.

For the best bang for the buck getting a set is actually not the way to go. Buy the pots/pans you will use the most.

Same for knives also. The knife I listed will beat even like a 7 knife set if it is the same price. Who cares if the knife is a different shape if it is still far inferior.

It's easy to get good knives nowadays. Make sure they use a forged (not stamped) "stain-resistant high carbon steel" or "surgical steel" (not stainless steel), a non-wooden handle, and a full tang (that is, the metal of the blade also runs the length of the handle).
