drew, You are in Houston now arent you? Have you considered seeing if someone from here can help you with fixing the one you have?? I do work like this on the side, and have been doing it since 94. Will be glad to work a deal with you. If not, how much do you want for the old one you are trying to replace? feel free to contact me if you are interested.
Same thing happened to my computer last month. Froze constantly. Reason? Bad motherboard. Rather than spend all that money on a new machine, maybe you should look into replacing the motherboard and keeping your case, power supply, memory, and hardware. It would surely be cheaper.
It may not be his motherboard though. What OS are you using, Drewdog? Here's a nice system for not a lot of cash: (under $700) www.nutrend.com Enlight 300Watts Mid-Tower Case EN-7101AX (NU=11116124) none CD/DVD ROM_RW & Media 0 $-321 Intel Original CPU fan for Socket 478 Processor (NU=35106025) Mitsumi 1.44MB Floppy Drive - WHITE (NU=21103104) 0 Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive (NU=22144102) 0 KBTEK 104 Keys PS2 Keyboard with Hand Rest (NU=23119103) Designer-Plus Scrolling Internet Easy+ Mouse (NU=26129001) 0 Multimedia Microphone with Base (NU=36111104) 0 Standard Crucial Micron 256MB PC 2100 DDR RAM (NU=20145001) 0 Linkskey LKF-5100 10/100 PCI Ethernet Card (NU=33117108) 0 Internal 56K V.92 PCI Modem (NU=25125002) 0 Standard none Monitors & Display 0 $-236 Gigabyte GA-8IE533 533/400MHz ATA100 CT5880 5.1 Sound Intel Pentium 4 2GHz 512K Socket 478 400MHz Processor Corel Office WP 2002 (NU=32106119) 0 Standard MS Windows XP Home OEM (NU=37110003) 0 Standard none Sound Cards 0 $-35 none Speakers & Headphones 0 $-26 LEADTEK WINFAST A180 GeForrce4 MX440 64MB DDR Video Card TV Out (NU=14122154) 0 Standard
I want to keep it as cheap as possible. If I do decide to replace it, I want to keep the price under $500. What are the specs on the system?
Even if it is the motherboard, it would depend on who built the original system. If it is a proprietary system, then the motherboard would need to be coded for that system.
Ill say this much... more often than not, the crashes are caused by corrupted drivers or system files... make damn sure that your software is in order before you go thru the hassle or cost of replacing parts.
If you can come up with a case of beer's worth extra (this costs $516), here's another nice setup from nutrend Maxtop 147KG2F-USB BLUE **Cool Case** Mid-Tower 350Watts Front USB 3 Fans (NU=11150028) 1 Standard none CD/DVD ROM_RW & Media 1 $-321 Dynatron DC1206BM-L615 High-End Cooler w/ 5300 RPM Fan Mitsumi 1.44MB Floppy Drive - WHITE (NU=21103104) 1 Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive (NU=22144102) 1 KBTEK 104 Keys PS2 Keyboard with Hand Rest (NU=23119103) Designer-Plus Scrolling Internet Easy+ Mouse Out of stock Multimedia Microphone with Base (NU=36111104) 1 Standard Crucial Micron 256MB PC2700 DDR RAM (NU=20145056) Linkskey LKF-5100 10/100 PCI Ethernet Card (NU=33117108) 1 Internal 56K V.92 PCI Modem (NU=25125002) none Monitors & Display 1 $-236 Gigabyte GA-7VAX ATA133 AC97 Sound USB 2.0 8X AGP AMD Athlon XP 2000+/266 FSB 256K Processor (NU=19103323) Corel Office WP 2002 (NU=32106119) 1 Standard MS Windows XP Home OEM (NU=37110003) 1 Standard none Speakers & Headphones 1 $-26 LEADTEK WINFAST A180 GeForrce4 MX440 64MB DDR Video Card TV Out (NU=14122154) 1 Standard
How about a temporary solution. They also have a $200, but I think it's OOS. You missed out on the $70 (after $710 in rebates) Dell computer from a couple of months back.
you could get a new dell for about $500 sans monitor... or what about getting a new HD and just reinstalling your OS?
I'll sell you my old Pentium: P5-60 mhz (the first Pentium, with the original, flawed chip) 16 MB RAM 2.4 Gig Hard Drive Double Speed CD Rom 33.6 dialup modem SB-128 PCI
I know that there have been a million and one suggestions about the problem already, but I know a couple of people who have had problems with their PCs freezing because of sub-standard memory. Have you tried swapping the various DIMMs in and out? Personally, I haven't experienced any problems with my TiBook
Have you thought about buying one of the "bare bones" systems offered by several companies and using your stuff for the rest? http://www.accessmicro.com/bto/index.phtml You can one of the "clearance" AMD systems for about $200.
I would go to BestBuy...I know they are owned by the devil and they've screwed me everytime, despite spending over $1,500 there in the last 3 months(and they decided to take another $1,600 out of my accout), anyways...get a VPR Matrix. They are namebrand inside and are cheap. Intel and name brand everywhere and the cases even look cool.
