and i'll make it again. (I know the NBA would never do this but i think it would add fun to the equation)....

    - with all the playoff jockeying, one thing I hate is that there are teams who are looking to potentially lose so as to secure a better matchup (try for 5th seed, instead of 3rd for example. get 6th instead of 5th to avoid the 1 seed in the second round another example)

i always thought that teams really should go for best record and so i've come up with this proposal....

    ------------
the top 4 seeds (based on best records and not just division winners) would get to cherry pick their first round opponent from the bottom 4 playoff seeds.
(of course they would pick in order and so the 4th seed technically doesn't have anyone left but the last remaining team)

in other words dallas could have avoided golden state and had some reward for having the best record.

but more importantly it would make the first round more exciting because basically one team is basically calling out the other team and saying I know we can beat you. think of the excitement and rivalries this could create...

also teams would be fighting really hard to get as high a seed as possible and not simply lose for a more cushy matchup.

also teams in the bottom 4 would be fighting at the end of the year to play as well as possible so as to not look too soft and be able to avoid being picked by higher teams. no more "resting for the playoffs"....

also lets say an 8th seed gets a great player back from an injury right at the end of the season. well in my system the 1st seed can avoid playing them until later rounds which would add a little excitement in terms of "you were afraid of us weren't you.." swagger.

    so what do you think------------

Its called tanking, something teams like sonics, miami are doing.

IMO only jackass losers tank. Anyteam, especially in the west caught tanking I will disrespect forever. Of course, some say teams are trying to get to play us, and right now UTAH seems to be winning.

But IMO, even if the teams try to play us, I don't think they're tanking. Remember, if you're a championship caliber team, you don't need to be scared of any team. So a team that tanks in order to play another team is obviously not a championship calibur team. Or in plain words, a bunch of losers.

that sounds like a crazy and awesome idea. the league would never allow this just because every sports league is so diplomatic in the way they conduct things. it sounds like something the wwe would do, but it would bring some excitement and badass-ness to the league. welcome to the attitude era.

the potential problem for this proposal, is that while it creates incentives to do better for the 1-4 seed, there's not so much incentives for the bottom halves for the playoff teams. consider the following case:

you have qualified for the playoffs, but are unlikely to catch up to the top 4. you know that you match terribly with the likely 3rd seed, so they almost certainly will pick you as the first round opponent. now... in order to avoid that match up, the most effective thing to do is probably tanking (hard!) and hope one of the top 2 teams (which you match better with) decides that you are the easy target and pick you before the 3rd seed do.

I personally would hate to see this happen but can see it happening quite frequently if the proposal is implemented.
