When we acquired Dikembe Mutumbo I was pleased. I thought it was a solid move and I imagined him coming in and doing what he has done. However, I must admit I was partly skeptical. I wondered could he even give us solid back up minutes at his age. He really came through for us. And aside from the fact that he's been a solid contributer off the bench, I love when he's in the game because I impersonate him the whole time, and even as he leaves the court. examples:

As he scores, "Mutumbo make basket!"
As he swats a shot, "Not in the house of Mutumbo!"
As he walks off the court, "Give Mutumbo the lime gatorade!"

I don't know if everybody has noticed how he seems to refer to himself as "Mutumbo" in interviews, but it cracks me up. Ordinarily I find it annoying when players refer to themselves in third person, but in this particular case it's just hilarious to me for some reason. Maybe it's that great raspy gravelly voice. I don't know.

Anyway, isn't it about time those who were critical of the acquisition eat their words? I think so.

    Go Mutumbo!

i liked it when it happened and mutombo's done what i expected. he's been great.

actually, i always knew he was great on D (who didn't?) but i never realized just how good he was and how good his natural shot-blocking talents were until watching him on my team everyday and realizing he's doing it at 80 years old with no vertical. he sometimes doesn't even seem to jump and still gets blocks. some people just have it. if yao had it, he'd average 5 blocks a game.

i'll admit it, he is doing much better than i thought he could... after seing his form at Jersey and Knicks i thought he was done.... his energy, defense and rebounding have been great and very needed considering what out other front court players bring in those areas...

I was watching a recording of the LA Clippers/Rox game (rewind, play, rewind, play...), I was trying to figure out how in the heck he's beating those guys to the apex of the shot.

There was a play were Brand was on the right side of the lane and Deke was waiting for him to jump. Brand did, took the shot and Deke grabbed it out of mid-air. It was funny because Brand beat him to the jump, but Deke can recover with those spider like arms.

Watch him next time. He sits there like a Praying Mantis, and holds one arm over the player, but uses the other arm like a tennis racket. He doesn't block the shot with the arm that's up. He uses the other one that's down. It's strange.

It looks like the only thing that'll get Mutombo to retire is when his balls start dragging behind him.

    Good job, big man. :D

I don't know what it is, but Mutombo is just so damn cool! Maybe it's the finger-wagging thing. I still remember a few years back when he blocked like six shots against Boston and was wagging the finger like crazy, and the league ended up telling him the finger-wagging had to go because it constituted taunting.

Fast-forward to our first win of the season against the Grizz... he blocks Gasol's dunk attempt, knocking him to the ground, throws the outlet pass, then just stands over Gasol and shakes his head at him like "not in my house, b****." That's gotta be the best moment of the season so far for me. Maybe the finger is gone, but he can still let you know to stay out of his house in style!

Exactly! If only, Houston wasn't stuck with the potential of Yao, and had a man playing center.....

I knew this was coming! :D

It's hard not to love him when he's on your team. It's amazing to see how many people dissed him back then. They probably all love him now. All is good.

    -good defense
    -low turnovers
-Besides Tmac, the best one on the team at creating own shot.
-doesn't look to shoot unless wide open, or on broken/end of period plays
-can beat the press(remember last year?)
    -finals experience
    -good flopper

All that equals a good backup guard.

Don't make me eat my words Lue! I know you are reading.

The thing about Deke is... he doesn't make mistakes. Sure, he's not an offensive destroyer like Shaq... But he boxes out the right people at the right time. He gets rebounds when he should, he blocks when he should (and sometimes when you don't expect), he gets up and down court. He's like a monument out there. Old and overlooked... yet capable and true.
