who has two prior drug possession convictions...one with intent to distribute. he has turned his life around...he's gotten a job as a custodian with a church...he's making headway...he's accepting responsibility...he's excited about making a new life for himself... and he tried to get an apartment near his work for he and his family. he was told that since he had a felony conviction within the PAST 10 YEARS he would be unable to get an apartment virtually anywhere in the area. i recognize the validity of laws that protect communities...but here is an application that simply makes no sense to me. how do you tell a guy who is just out of prison and paid his debt to society, "go take care of yourself and your family...stay out of trouble." then when he gets a job and starts to make some real positive steps, he's ultimately told he can't get a place to live....this is just sad. The church is doing everything they can to help out....looking for creative solutions. But it's hard to see a man have the door slammed in his face on something so simple as getting a place for his family to live close to where he works.
