i know this is a long shot but, if we could get the nets pick for something like this (#9 , kenny thomas, and kelvin cato) who would we pick? in unrelated news, there's this cool website, like a fantasy basketball league, where you are the gm of a team and you get to trade players and also draft players from college, well anyways here's the site. http://nbagmleague2000.homestead.com/Main.html ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan. Well even if they were going to give up the #1 pick, Cato, KT, and pick 9 is WAY WAY too much to give. Without a doubt, we'd take Stromile Swift, but the facts remain it's practically impossible to move up and any deal like the one you came up with has us getting raped. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
i would do that trade in a heartbeat. any time you have a chance at landing a talent like Swift or Martin you do it, i wouldn't mind throwing in drew and williams either if thats what it took to get the deal done. the most i see cato, thomas, and whoever we get at #9 being are very good role players. you win championships with superstars not with a team full of role players. superstar talent is a lot harder to find then role players like cato and thomas. I highly doubt though that the nets would take that deal, their looking more for quality rather then quantity.
i agree that good centers are hard to find but players with the talent of stromile swift is so much harder to find. i like the combo of stromile swift and steve francis a lot better then the combo of francis and cato. stromile could very likely average 20ppg and i don't see cato averaging much more then 10 ppg.
IMHO: It would require another team involved, as NJ weants a high pick to be included. Guess at somewhere around 4-7. .................................................... At the cost of Walt(yeah, I know I always start out with Walt packing his bags, don't I?), Drew and Detroits owed pick, we trade up. Chicago loses the #4 and #24. NJ loses #1. ....................................................... We get the #1 and the #24. NJ gets the #4 and Walt Chicago gets the #9, Drew and Detroit's marker ........................................................ Of course now the Rockets parlay that #24 into a #10 with Orlando somehow!!!! Chuckle. ------------------
i don't think any deal we make will get us the number one pick unless we give up cato. i'm as big a cato fan as anyone but i said it many times and i'll say it again we NEED second superstar to compete for a title or at least an all-star caliber player, if it takes cato to get that second superstar then so be it.
But we would just end up centerless. And as much as I am down on Cato's outright quit at the end of the season*, we need his presence in the middle. Hakeem will play what I call "Kate Smith" minutes. You know Kate Smith the fat lady who sang the national anthem in all those stadiums and arenas. She opened and closed each ceremony. Was great when she was doing it. Was predictable. was not as good looking as she once was, but you were always glad she came to every game. Pig can give us short relief. He's smart with the ball and is an excellent passer. Now if we were able to fanagle Kandiman from the HairClips or Huffman from the Hebrews, I would use Cato to garner some respectable beef and picks. *( .......and I mean quit. I watched a whole passel of games live last year, and during most of the final twenty games, there was Kelvin standing around literally leaning on one leg, picking his teeth and scratching his butt. My youngest tax deduction says: "Daddy why isn't he allowed to play too?" He was embarassing to watch.) ------------------
oeilpere, I'd do that deal in a heartbeat, but why in the world would Chicago or NJ agree to that? For Chicago, they lose the opportunity to take a great player like Miles at the #4 in exchage for a future pick that may or may no be in the lotto, and a short unathletic PG. For NJ, that's equivalent to losing Swift or Martin for Mihm and Walt. I think they would be much better off drafting Martin and packaging him in a trade to fill their. I think dice 7_11 hit the nail on the head, when he says that the only way we'll be able to move up is to package Cato; however, IMHO I don't think it's a good idea to dump him until we have a replacement C. ------------------
He's talking about his daughter, it really is him. YES!! ------------------ "Go to hell Costas"-Dave Nelson after sweeping the ABSCAs on NewsRadio visit www.swirve.com
Chicago has needs like each of the teams represented here. Drew is a proven player, and I know that I may have a less jaundiced view of Drew's capabilities than some, but frankly he would do a good job for them. In some respects a perfect fit. Excellent basics, old style PG, capable shooter, can driven if asked to do so, unselfish and very coachable. Darius Miles is a long term project especially for a team like Chicago. The Detroit pick may actually be conveyed this year(#14), they are making noises about wanting to get out of it and take a trade or lower picks and a second or something. At best, keep it until next year when Grant Hill leaves and Detroit is in dire starits and lottery-bound. Chicago also has #7 and if anything, I think Miles will go around the #7 . IMHO, the lineuip (not in order) may easily be: Swift, Martin, Mihm, Pryz, Fizer, Courtney Alexander. TzkTZzk, even Der Marr may all go before him. I know he has all these skills, but he is a very raw, long term project. Well NJ has already conceded the opportunity to draft any of those guys. THEY already said they want to trade it off. As late as this AM I heard a Morning TV Sports broadcast saying NJ is actively searching for offers for the one. So that is a moot point your making there. If it is any consolation, I agree with you, I would draft and trade if I were NJ also, but I am not and they obviously want to do something else. If I had as many problems as they appear to have, I could see myself unloading the #1 for two later picks or a starting player and a pick. Well I disagree. That may be the cleanest way to move up, certainly. Involving Cato gains you some trade respect. Kinda like an "EF Hutton" thing. Everyone would want to listen to any proposal. I'll not lie to you,I do like Cato/Drew/#9 for Clips #3 and Kandi or something like that, then trading that #3 plus something to NJ for the Big #1. Or even Chicago getting Cato and #9 for the #4 and #24 and parlaying that somewhere. But, I absolutely agree we need to have some solid "Center Answers" before we start trading anyone out of that position. I do like Huffman. I like Michael Owolokandi as a student with Hakeem as the tutor this coming season(actually I like that a whole lot, and I know a lot of people here do not, but that would be a fitting passing of the ball in my estimation. Kandi would flourish in that scenario.) I hope Cato shines this season, and I am sure that is the basis of the Rockets thoughts on him also. ------------------ [This message has been edited by oeilpere (edited June 23, 2000).]
I've got to go with Cato and KT in this situation. Cato fits our team perfectly, has shown enough promise in preseason to justify a chance, and can block everyone in the league, including Mailman 7x in one game. Consistent court time will make a difference. Cato is no guarantee, but he can be your superstar. Plus he's a center. Could be better than Kemp on raw potential, but must learn a few moves before he can equal the rainman. I like his numbers for 35 minutes. Thow in KT and you've got a good backup 3 and 4. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
i thought it was the "reignman" .well, anyways in unrealted news, check this site out: http://nbagmleague2000.homestead.com/main.html ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan.
Shawn Kemp was the 2nd best player in the league in '96, I don't think Cato even has the potential to be 2nd best on the team. ------------------ Too-Rye-Aye!
pere-Remember those lengthy discussions? We were among the minority who liked Kandi. I want Swift pretty bad. dice-You made a mistake there. Everyone agrees that Francis-Swift is better than Francis-Cato, but is Francis-Swift-Pig Miller, better than Francis-Dermarr Johnson-Cato? I'll take the latter. ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better.
Obviuosly the rockets need to find a replacement center. I'm just saying finding a role player center is MUCH easier then finding a potential superstar talent like Swift.
i'm sure Dream would do an adequate job at the center spot in his final season and after that we can address the center problem via free agency or from the draft, which is loaded with centers.
Could we maybe trade Cato + #9 to NJ, Keith Van Horn to Orlando (along with Bryce Drew?), and we get their picks? And take Przbilla with one of'em? (Seems no one should want to pass up on Kenyon Martin. But do we want Przbilla? Does Orlando want KVH?) ------------------
Nike, that's a good way to look at it. Every year, there are reaches at the center position that turn out to be wasted picks. How many teams other than Chicago with Jordan overcame a "role playing center"? Cato may not be the answer at center, but right now, I still think he has the potential to be an elite center. The buzz now is "the next KG". So far, the T-wolves have not overcome a weak link at center. ------------------
ROX, i wouldn't trade cato unless we a get a superstar caliber player. if we get #5,#10, and #13 all we would be able to draft would be good role players and this team is full of good role players.
You're right, Dice. What I wonder is how Rudy reacts to Cato's attitude problems. Whenever a Rocket whines or pouts, that man finds himself making travel plans. I'm thinking of the off-chance that Rudy isn't forced to swallow his curses and deal with the 6'11" headache; "off" chance because after these finals, Shaq will be standing in the way of every effort to win a championship (and he'll loiter in the paint while the officials look the other way, thinking, "Stern should pay us more to pretend we don't notice this, this s^%$ is a little obvious..." ------------------
