I still love basketball, but not NBA basketball ... I want to love the Rockets, I want to get excited about NBA games, but they're just boring

I mean, people standing around the 3 point line, only star players getting to cut and move on offense, for that matter only your top 2 or 3 players having any plays called for them . What the heck is that??

    Problems that could be resolved:

    - Way too many long shots
    - Too many calculated trips to the foul line
    - Too many regular season games
    - Too many teams given the amount of effective non-star contributors
    - NBA Draft
    - Rabid free agency

    Problems that can't be resolved:

    - Generally uninspired play by more than half of the league's players
    - CBA (looooong, guaranteed contracts & max player concept)
    - Superstar hype machine
    - Meaningless games

With so many games, you have teams running away with division titles with 20-30 games remaining, you have teams out of contention midway through the year, you have early tanking, you have players getting into shape during the regular season, you have alot more potential for injuries, you have players breaking down quicker, etc etc That is probably the biggest issue, and of course there's plenty more to discuss.

It's frustrating b/c we know what the problems are, but because of the financial incentives involved they will never be solved. a great game ruined by money, I feel .... it's too bad that great talents have to waste their physical potential playing in meaningless games

i feel you. honestly, its hard/painful for me to watch any nba game that doesnt involve the rockets. THe NBA game is poor. A lot has to do with officiating, imo. games are overly long and the excess fouls called destroy any flow to the game. Most of the regular season games are guys going through the moties, etc.

honestly, i prefer NCAA. i'd rather watch 2 average or poor teams in college play eachother than 2 average of poor teams in the nba play.

They should do an anonymous survey and I bet less than 10% of the league's players state "basketball" to be their biggest concern ... money's always been there, but it's really done a number on the game now

And no I didn't just realize this but for several years I just thought I was too busy to watch more games; then I realized I would have watched them if they were any good ...

pretty clever, but if you've felt this way for so long why did you join this forum three years after I did and put up 2,000 more posts than me ? i guess you were bored during the games

i casually watch the playoffs when there's nothing else on but i only find entertainment in watching the rockets play. the nba isn't what it used to be, i'd rather watch a random french open match then the pistons/cavs series, for example.

the money and refs are a huge problem and i really wish they'd go back to the pre-zone era. that's the main reason why i find college basketball completely unwatchable.

i like the nba game but it's boring when half the players don't really try to win during the season.

you want players to play hard all the time? give them a 10% raise in salary for every 5 games above .500 thier team is at the end of the season. also give them a 10% reduction in salary for every 5 games below .500 thier team is.

i bet you would see some of the most hard faught basketball of your life.

its not even about the styles. Personally, i like to watch methodical teams work, like the spurs. Its pure basketball and a joy to watch. the suns/gs are fast paced teams but its not really better basketball, just faster and more shooting. that doesnt necessarily make it more fun

I've been saying for years that the NBA needs to scrap the 3-point line all together. Didn't they originally put it in so that teams still had a chance to tie if they were down by 3 with 5 seconds left? Maybe I remember that wrong.

But there are too many bad shooters taking too many 3-pointers causing too many long rebounds which makes boxing out almost a lost art. Without the 3 point line, you would see more players taking more mid-range shots (another lost art), and going to the basket more. Less standing around and waiting for the outlet pass too.

Seems like almost every NBA offense looks exactly the same, with the exception of the mavs, suns and warriors.

I think long seasons are a part of it. It's a marathon, and the importance of a single game is not much. I think that's why the NFL and NCAA basketball/football are more interesting and in general more intense. A 50 game season might make it more compelling, although financially the NBA has no reason to make any dramatic changes.

I think the NBA is in pretty good shape, sure some teams I don't want to watch but there are always games on that I love to watch.
