Whoops! I guess in my excitement I forgot some of us aren't guitar players. Texas Specials are a type of pick-up for the guitar. ------------------ Hey now, Hey now, don't Dream it's over...
Ah, ok. I thought it was somethin' havin' to do with a car or pickup or something. lol. Cool. ------------------ "So you say you want some intelligent responses? I say give me something intelligent to respond to." -- Dimwits beware, B-Ball freak tells it like it is. Sing it bro!

Those are nice pickups. They should make that strat sound cool. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Darn, when I read the topic, I thought I could get some new pickup lines . . . ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
Speaking of pickups, has anyone tried Kinman's noiseless "single coil"pickups? ------------------ The sky is falling!
Noiseless single coils?? Isn't that an oxymoron? Actually, I've always like the Lace Sensors and the Rio's. They are very quiet and sound great. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
speaking of guitars, i'm really interested in learning to play.. any advice on brand/make for a beginner? or any places that sells good equipment? ------------------ barkley for president
it's been a while since Ive picked up my axe. Back in sepetember, i walked into MOJO guitar shop in the East Village for a guitar string. but i walked out with a blues harmonica in the key of E. Since then, I have been playing the blues ever since. now I have blues harps(HOHNER) in the key of C,G,A,Bb, and E. I taught myself ina cuple of weeks. i have been jammin to the greats- willie dixon, Led Zeppelin(musical GODS), BOb DYlan, and other great harmonica players. Still, it would be nice to play the old six-string again. maybe I'll finally buy that guitar string....... "We've tried to get that all season, with Hakeem and me clicking at the same time. "Scoring wise, this is the best inside-outside game Hakeem and I have had. Tonight we did a good job of weathering the storm. They came at us a lot of different ways and we handled them all."
stone cold, please post when you get the strat back. I want to hear how they sound. I've been considering those pick-ups for a while. ------------------ - Beck Dream...bring back the goggles
Beck -- Absolutely gorgeous -- without a doubt some of the tastiest pick-ups I've ever heard. They breathed new life into my Strat. If I ever figure out how to record a soundfile and upload it, I'll let you hear'm. InsideOut -- How much do you have to spend? Fender offers the Squier package which comes with the Squier/Strat-knockoff (A decent guitar in its own right) and the practice amp (10 watts I think), all for like $279 (don't quote me). You can get an Ibanez package for around the same price. Play the guitar before you buy it!!!!! That can't be stressed enough. Every guitar plays different, and not every guitar is for everyone. Its a matter of finding something that feels comfortable for you. What kind of music do you listen to? Fenders are wonderfully versatile except they don't do the metal thing very well -- Ibanezs are better equipped for that. Telecasters are wonderful for Blues and Country. At the low end of the budget, you probably won't find any Les Pauls or Gibsons (great rock guitars), but DeArmond makes a pretty decent Gibson imitation for around $200. Jackson makes some beautiful axes -- those usually start at around $400 (I did see a few for $350 at GC). They're real comfortable and play real easy and have a nice, thick crunchy sound to them. B.C. Rich -- they look pretty, but thats about it. Stay away. As for gear, I get most of mine now from the House of Guitars, at Louetta and Champions Forest. Guitar Center is pretty decent but a bit pricey, Mars is a bit cheaper. Jeff -- What are these Lace Sensors I keep hearing about? ------------------ Hey now, Hey now, don't Dream it's over...
Lace Sensors have been around since the early 90's. Clapton uses them in his modern strats. They are essentially an active design in a passive pickup. They are very quiet and come in very mild bluesy models up to very hot types. I still love the way they sound though they aren't in production as much as they used to be. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Jeff, I just recently found out, from an old old freind, that you know these old old freinds of mine. Alex and Gerard Garcia. Small world, aint it. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Speaking of beginner's guitars, I bought my son an Epiphone Les Paul-copy guitar, which is made by Gibson to be their low-end. It appears to be a pretty decent guitar as beginner's guitars go. As for those Lace Sensor pickups, it seems like they've been around longer than since the early '90s. I thought I remembered them from the late '80s when I was still in high school and actually read guitar magazines and went to guitar stores regularly (but maybe not). ------------------ Houston Sports Board
I can remember a guy who had what looked like Lace Sensors back in the mid-to-late 80's (when I was in high school). If anyone is interested in the lace pickups, here is their website: www.agi-lace.com As for the Kinmans, Jeff, they're actually stacked humbuckers -- www.kinman.com . Noiseless single coils are indeed an oxymoron. Here's a review of them (along with the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage "single coils"): www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/nov98/articles/pickup.htm ------------------ The sky is falling! NO WAY!!!! How in the hell do you know Gerard and Alex?? I was just thinking about Gerard. He and I converse via email every once in a while and he has played on some of my stuff. We recorded together quite a bit before he moved to LA LA land. Wow! Small world, indeed. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Jeff, I have known the Garcia brothers since the early '70's. I hadn't heard from Alex in years. He found my e-mail addy and we have been catching up on old times. I thought for sure one of them would have hit it big in the music biz. They are both awesome axe-men. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Gerard and I played together quite a bit in the early 90's. How did you find out we knew each other? Gerard is a terrific guitarist as is Alex. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
